    REALLY disappointed!

I have been going to Diner for at least the last 6 years. I have always loved the food. My favorite was the burger and those great fries. I went there last week and something has gone wrong! The fries were not the fries they usually serve...they were undercooked and under seasoned. The burger was on some discount store roll. I sent the fries back to be cooked some more but the flavor was just not there like it used to be.

    surprisingly delicious

i was all prepared for diner to be overrated and disappoint, but it did not at all. the worst dish we had was still great; the best was revelatory. definitely try the burger; it is hands-down the best i've had in new york. i don't even generally like hamburgers but i had a few bites of my friend's and couldn't believe it - velvety, rich, melts in your mouth (if you get it medium-rare; i can't vouch for anything else). we also had a perfectly cooked horseradish-scented halibut and raw cheese flatbread appetizer. the only disappointing part was the cocktails, which you can skip.

Why must your chicken be so dry?

I wanted the food to be better because I like the atmosphere-- but the chicken was dry. Also the fact that the menu changes frequently makes it difficult to decide if you really want to go there because there is always a chance that you will get all the way there and not like anything on the menu. Male= Never Again Female= Try it again

    Best Burger in NYC

This review is about the burger at Diner. It is best had, in my humble opinion, at medium-rare. It will melt in your mouth on that brioche bun. Trumps Dumont and Spotted Pig easily. Getting hungry just typing this.

    top-notch service

i admit the food here can be hit-or-miss depending on the night (though the misses are still better than most of what you can get elsewhere), but i've never been somewhere with such consistently friendly, attentive service. sure, the waitresses look like they haven't eaten in six weeks, but that's the wmsburg look -- they couldn't be happier to tell you all about the amazing food you're about to eat, bring you extra bread, keep the drinks coming, etc etc etc. Feels like a real neighborhood joint, which is awesome.

    spectacular service, great food

I had a phenomenal evening at Diner. The atmospheric, vintage feeling was great, and our salads (shaved zucchini with anchovy dressing for me, watercress/peach/fried okra for him) were terrific. But it was our entrees when the restaurant really shined: when the runner brought over the boyfriend's pan-roasted blackfish (so great, so so great), it turned out that the kitchen had completely forgotten to make my salmon. We tried to wave it off it really was no big deal but our fantastic server, the manager, and the runner were all gracious and concerned above and beyond what the situation called for. Unasked, they brought over a bowl of summer squash soup with butter croutons for me to eat while the salmon was cooking, and then also insisted that we have a slice of the (amazingly delicious) plum cake for dessert. The check, when it came, was for far less than it should have been we made up the difference with a tip, and probably should have left even more. Honestly, it was one of the best service experiences I've ever had. And it didn't hurt that the food knocked it all out of the park.

    I'm really into this place

I like food, good food, I especially find that while NY is a wonerful place to eat, no one has the creativity and guts to have a menu comprised almost entirely of specials. This place does. If you like going to places and ordering the same thing day in and day out without surprises and vegetables flown in from south america then this is not your place. Local, seasonal, great flavors, everything cooked to perfection and it will not kill your wallet. The atmosphere is welcoming and you don't get the sort of pretension that comes with obnoxious places all over NY. I'm a NY'er and I have to say this is the sort of place that more restaurants should be following an example of.
