    tasteless food

The moment I tasted the first appetizer, a cauliflower dish, I knew that this was not what I thought of as Indian food. It had a sauce whose only taste was that of ketchup. And this taste was duplicated time and time again in the other dishes. Bland is ok for byrianis, but at least they have the taste of non-chili spices. This stuff was tasteless. The waiter told us that the chili stew was very, very hot. It was very, very bland. The breads were far inferior to those you get on 6th Street. The lamb chops were very, very good. And the bill came to $174+ tip for 5 people.! Luckily we had a big discount so it didn't hurt too much. But never again.

    Going Down Hill

I will keep it short here. We have been going to Devi for the past two years and have always found the place to have Indian food a cut above most others. However after dining there last night, we will not be returning. Maybe it was a bad night in the kitchen, I really dont know or care, especially at their prices. The food; tandoori lambchops and shrimp were horrid, the shrimp tasted like leftovers and the lamb was a poor excuse for true tandoori lambchops, tastelss and mushy. Enough said.

Great value for restaurant week--excellent food!

Came here with large group of 7 people for a work lunch. Everyone was very satisfied. The lamb chops were the best I have ever eaten and the mango panna cotta was divine!

    Addictive Okra!

The okra appetizer are like crack fries. You can't put them down. Salty, tangy, crunchy. I'd go back here just for the okra. The bhel is great, as is the salmon cakes. The scallop bacalo was listed as being spicy, but it was pretty mild. The tomato relish that came with it was outstanding. The kofta is a great veggie option. Desserts are top notch.

    Disappointing Ending

I went here for my 40th birthday. The food was delicious, out waiter was fantastic. But then the maitre d', who had been rude all throughout the night (we ignored him because we really wanted to enjoy ourselves), rushed us out saying, "My 10 pm is coming in and I need this table." That's it. Just like that--"ok, get out." No smile, no apology for making our dining experience into an assembly line. We hadn't been lingering, either. We'd just finished our desserts. A shame, because despite the delicious food, it left a terrible taste in my mouth. I complained to the manager, but he was hardly better. Very disappointing on such an important evening.

    birthday dinner

Went out for birthday dinner on Wed. night -- the restaurant was mostly empty which normally is not a good sign, but the atmosphere was warm and the service was great (attentive waiters, kitchen not dragging its feet). Got salmon cakes and frito misto as apps -- both very good esp. frito misto. Halibut was a good portion and very moist and tender in a nice zesty sauce. Lamb stuffed chicken was exceptional (accompanied but a nice thai-like okra salad) -- so moist and flavorful!

Great service, cute place, (mostly) good food.

Being Indian, I am pretty discerning when it comes to Indian restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised with Devi. The service was excellent, which is not always the case in most Indian restaurants. The cocktails were inventive and tasty--I had an expertly made gin & tonic made with muddled cilantro. My friends and I tried several dishes off the menu, and on the whole I found the fusion-style dishes to work a lot better than the traditional dishes. My favorite of the appetizers was the frito misto. The calamari and shrimp were crispy and cooked perfectly, and the spices added a nice kick to a potentially boring dish. The other appetizers were good, but nothing special. Of the main courses, the fish of the day was outstanding. The fish was moist and fresh, and the accompaniments were really interesting. The squash was soft and slightly sweet, whereas the rasam sauce was pungent and spicy. They both provided nice contrasts to the fish. The Indian dishes were fine but nothing to write home about. If you want great Indian food there are plenty of cheaper options out there. But if you want something new and interesting, definitely go with the fusion dishes here. I was very impressed!
