There aren't that many restaurants in the Morningside Heights neighborhood that are large, have decent food, and are open for all three meals. And the food at Deluxe really is good. But the service is not very good--there aren't many places in the neighborhood that are good to go to if you're in a hurry, other than the Chinese restaurants--and it's not entirely kid friendly. The kids meals only come with fried food as side dishes, and if you ask to substitute vegetables, you get an extra charge. Great example to set the next generation! It's always crowded and noisy, though, which makes it less painful to take noisy kids there...

Yes, the restaurant is often crowded and the waitstaff has to compensate for business with overextended friendliness. But for the price, and the value of the food, and the extensiveness of the menu, you can't beat it. Also, a great place to take a family. The waitstaff really know how to take care of family tables, and the breakfast menu is terrific!

I just moved from 112th street, and I am having a big problem. They don't deliver where I live! I miss the sirloin burger with fries, and Cheddar cheese, YUM!

The only reason to go here is that Columbia students don't really have many other choices for decent food. The food here is alright, but as with all restaurants in the Columbia area (save for a rare few), the service is poor because they know they can get away with it. I've been there numerous times, and on average, you have to wait about 30-40 minutes to get your food -- during which, your water does not get filled and the waitress does not come back to check on you. On the plus side, it's one of the few places in Morningside Heights with good American food that isn't too greasy.

Deluxe is okay in a pinch since it's conveniently located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood, but it's definitely one of those places that's gotten too caught up in its own success. The service often suffers unchecked as a result, especially where the wait staff is concerned. They're nice enough to be sure, but any time the restaurant is running at more than 50% capacity, you may start to feel like you've disappeared into the upholstry when you want to order dessert or pay your check. If you're sitting down you'll also have to deal with pretty cramped table space, which isn't too bad, but don't even think about calling in for delivery or a pick-up. For some reason, it takes these guys almost an hour to cook a hamburger and deliver it 3 blocks away. Other restaurants in the neighborhood (even ones with more complicated menues and online ordering systems) don't take nearly that long. I also had them forget to place my order once when I walked in. I came back a half-hour later to pick up a pretty simple meal only to stand around while the wait staff fumbled to come up with a better reason for why it wasn't done than, "Uh, we forgot to call that one into the kitchen. Sorry." And though generally their food is solid B-level fare with a couple of signature dishes, they tend to skimp or certain things for no particular reason. Just a couple of examples: a slice of their cheesecake is on the bare and stingy side, and the tomato that comes with your burger will be the tiniest little slice you've ever seen (enough to cover the bun will cost you an extra dollar). Deluxe could easily correct its shortcomings with a minimal amount of energy, but the management just doesn't bother. So long as Deluxe has its steady stream of hungry, undiscerning students, I think the rest of us are just beyond their concern.

A nice variety and great tasting food. Good service and atmosphere, but choice of music is whack!
