Don't order online from them
The food is generally pretty good at Deluxe, and most of my in-restaurant experiences there have been decent, but I recently used their website to order delivery online, and was quite displeased with the result. They don't regularly check their online orders it seems, because it took and hour and forty minutes to arrive, and when it did arrive, items were missing. They refunded me the items that they missed, but from a service standpoint, they should have given me a refund on the whole order! So just a word of advice, call them directly if you want to order...

Their are much better choices
Really just very average. As a local business, I can tell you that in this day and age, you have to do a whole lot better than average to stay ahead of the competition....and there is a lot of competition nearby....

Just never as good as it should be
I've lived in the neighborhood since before Deluxe opened, so despite decidedly mixed feelings, I do wind up going there a couple of times a year. The decor is cheerful and "upscale diner," and so you walk in expecting good things. On the culinary front, the menu is appealing, but in execution the food ranges from reasonably good to mediocre. It's not consistent, but at its best it's only pretty good. The service, on the other hand, is consistently under par: I've NEVER had a meal there where I wasn't straining to find the waiter at key moments....it doesn't seem to matter whether the place is empty or full; when you need your waiter you will not find him/her. I find that both in the food and the service, there's an irritating laxness to the approach to customers at Deluxe--as if you're a necessary inconvenience. Since that has been a constant in all the years it's been open, I have to figure it's a reflection of the ownership/management. There aren't a lot of good choices in this neighborhood, but I much prefer Le Monde directly across the street, or the new Vanelli a block or two south which is really quite good. They're a more expensive, but you'll have a better experience. ( Or, now closed for renovation, the West Way Cafe is a favorite--it was a classic diner, but we'll see what's what happens when it reopens.)

Not good food...
I used to be addicted to the grilled vegetable sandwich at Deluxe, and my husband was also a huge fan of the turkey club so we used to come all the time. About a year ago they cut back on their food quality (and of course did not lower prices) and I've hated it ever since. They did away with the delicious focaccia that they used to use for sandwiches and replaced it with seven-grain grocery style sandwich bread. Totally ruins it. I also had a really gross omelette here once and decided it just wasn't worth it anymore. The mac and cheese is also way to runny and greasy. The only positive things I can say is that the fries are delicious and I like sitting in a booth.

Order the Chef Salad!
It's amazing - and huge! Great lunch or dinner at a reasonable price!

Between a Bistro and a Dinner
By far a better choice than greasy but more famous Tom's Restaurant down the block. There are some good old fashioned diner choices and some extras as well as a full bar and choice of indoor or outdoor seating. For reasons I can't fathom, no matter how empty, or how much staff is around, services is always a bit slow. The breaksfasts are good, and I'd be happier if they kept breakfast on the menu 24/7, not sure why they don't. Sandwiches and burger type stuff also nice with real greens instead of fries if that's your thing. The skinny is this -- you can go there with people without embarrassment. You can take your burgher loving nephew, your salad loving cousin and your vegan sister and you'll all find something decent.

I used to love Deluxe, especially their spring rolls. I hadn't been there in a few months and was craving the spring rolls so I went back with a friend around 4 pm on a Wednesday. The restaurant itself was basically empty except for 8 employess milling around. We were seated promptly and given water but it took 8 minutes before someone came to take our drink order. We ordered everything at once. While waiting, we saw the bartender get into a verbal battle with a busboy. Needless to say we were very unconfortable sitting there. The drinks when they finally arrived were wrong. Our order consisted of 4 appetizers. It took 30 minutes to get any food. The soup and quiche were good, as were the calamari. Oh but the spring rolls! They were ice cold on the inside! It took more than 30 minutes to semi-fry a pair of pre-made spring rolls? The waitress seemed very puzzled when I explained to her they were cold. She asked if I wanted them warmed up. I told her to fire a new pair because they were already cut and very soggy so you couldn't fry them. Finally a new set arrived which were hot but soggy. They also happened to be rancid! I could smell they were off the second they came to the table. How did they not notice the smell? When I told her they were off, she thought I was saying they tasted differently (from the usual). Once I clarified she took them away without a comment. After waiting some time trying to get the check, the manager came over and asked what was wrong. We told him and asked for the check. When he came back with the check he said we should have told him immediately if there was a problem and I shouldn't have eaten it. Well I took a bite to check I wasn't crazy about the smell and then my friend put some on her plate to taste it... we ate two bites! I thought simply telling the waitress the food was bad would be sufficient. Didn't know I had to talk to also convey the message... Atleast they didn't make us pay for the food. The experience and ambience was hostile and unfriendly. I will never return and am very sad that their great spring rolls are gone.
