thought this place would be overpriced and overrated (sorta my thoughts on jewelbako and jack's luxury oyster bar), but the meal i had there two weeks ago was sublime. chef prepared everything in front of us (intimate sushi bar atmosphere) and most of what i tried was amazing. bonito's a winner, quail was outta this world, can't remember everything i ate or tried (though i do recall not being too impressed with the lamb) but can say that the menu succeeds -- where others do not -- at marrying culinary flavors/ingredients that may initially seem disagreeable. not your traditional tapas, but a spectacular meal nonetheless. wish i could remember more. just go.

Last night was my second time dining at this restaurant and there is simply no word good enough to describe my experience .. but i will try anyway. It was my bf's b-day and i called to tell them that the dinner was for a special occasion. When i walked in, the host came right up to me to discuss our tasting menu. We decided that my bf and I would each get a different tasting menu to try. Everyone was extremely accomodating, the owner himself came up to make sure we were pleased, gave us seats in front of the chef, and even proceeded to pour us some champagne on the house! What ensued was even more amazing. I'm usually a pretty harsh critic, and having eaten at places like Per Se, Ducasse, Jean Georges, etc., I was becoming jaded of nyc food. I 've been looking for a place that's different, but still gastronomically pleasing - something that would surprise me with great flavors and creativity. I got that and more. Every dish was perfect and my bf was so happy! And when i ordered a glass of Sauternes, the host himself came over to wish my bf a happy b-day, poured each of us a glass of sauternes and told us the drinks were also on the house. We couldn't have been happier!! My bf was so surprised and pleased! This restaurant is perfect in my book. The last time I rated a restaurant this high was after my dinner at Per Se. But even after i tipped the waiter 25%, my check still came out to only $150 - one quarter of the check at Per Se. Considering value, service, and food, i give it a 5 star!

the service was poor. the waiter was rude. options on the menu all sound tasty, but the actual execution was lacking. this is one of those places that concentrate too much on the decor and not enough on the food. and certainly not enough on hiring helpful or knowledgeable personnel.
