Could have fed a village...
Average food. Pushy waiter. Attentive servers. Skip the tasting menu - it's over-priced for what you get. The atmosphere was nothing to write home about.

Awesome!
We had a great night here, service was outstanding, our booth table in the corner was super cozy and the food (tasting menu $65/head) was incredible.... We were supposed to go out afterwards but were way to full and satisfied to even consider doing anything else. We had two bottles of wine so it was a pricey evening, but if you're out to spoil yourself with delicious food, Dawat is the place to do it! Unpretentious, yet tasteful decor and food, right down to dessert was fantastic.

Just OK
The food here is just a little better than average, I read the review in zagats so I had to give it a try, I don't know what all the fuss is about. The food was just ok. I tell you one thing you don't have to worry about getting in for lunch - the place was empty. To be fair the service was good, the place smelt good, and I enjoyed my meal. I just cannot justify the price.

Great (upscale) Indian
If you are looking for upscale Indian (read: not huge or spicy portions, but attentive service and flavorful dishes), this is a great restaurant. The food was good (definitely try the Chicken Saag) but quite pricey. Try this place for a special occassion.

Best Indian in Manhattan
This is the best Indian food I have had in NY.....Tamarind is a very close runner up.

Over Expensive
If you like your curry hot with some spice this place ain't for you. Me and my wife decided to celebrate valentine's day and boy were we in for a disappointment!! They had a fixed menu for $75/person - and half of the curries waiter forgot to bring in till our meal was almost done. If you like the taste of real India I won't recommend it. Its so-called world renowned chef Madhu Jaffrey is over-rated to say the least.

Beautiful Food
Having lived in London and sampled some really stupendous Indian food, I got a bit spoiled. Most of the New York stuff tastes like slop by comparison. At Dawat, however, the food is exquisite, the spicing is careful, and the service is warm and attentive without being intrusive. The salmon with corriander chutney is awesome.
