Solid midtown lunch option
Of course you have to like indian food. That said, it may be the best value in midtown for a sitdown lunch. And speedy too with the buffet.

Best lunch buffet in Manhattan
Darbar's $11 lunch buffet (as of 8/13/09) is probably the best Indian buffet -- and arguably the best lunch value -- in Manhattan. Today's entrees included chicken tikka masala (excellent), tandoori chicken (excellent), vegetable makhani (excellent), a fish curry/masala (excellent), and a few others. They also had a wide range of salad and appetizer options that looked beautiful, fresh, and delicious. Desserts include mango mousse (great), gulab jamoon (great), custard/flan (great), rice pudding, fruit, etc. The atmosphere is as classy as the food is fresh and colorful -- far beyond what you would expect for an $11 lunch. All the dishes were either great or excellent (except the rice pudding, which was only OK by my taste). Highly recommended.

the legend is back (with vindaloo done right)
Never before had I been so disappointed in a restaurant's demise since the original Darbar on 46th street closed its doors. But the legend lives on! I inadvertently stumbled upon their new location while walking to Grand Central, assuming the name was just a coincidence, and that the two spots were unrelated. But by the time I got my lamb vindaloo, I started to wonder why it tasted exactly the same as the old, delicious Darbar. Vindaloo is a hard Indian dish to get right; it is often too heavy on the vinegar, so spicy all flavor is obliterated, and the lamb, being quite hard to cook right, is too frequently dry, fatty, or chewy. Not so here! The vindaloo sauce was a perfect balance of heat and flavor without the vinegar aftertaste, and the lamb was so tender it fell apart under my fork, with no gristle to be found. I didn't even need a knife. Bravo, Darbar Grill! Now convinced that this must be their new location, I confirmed my hopes with the staff, who informed me that they recently reopened in this location -- a smaller joint, granted, but these are hard times to pay for the huge, two-floored restaurant it used to be. The wait staff was friendly and attentive (although my boyfriend and I went late, so who knows how it is when it's busy). For those Indian fanatics who judge a restaurant on its mint chutney, the green sauce did not disappoint either. I am elated that the best Indian food in Manhattan is back, and hopefully here to stay. I plan on checking out the lunch buffet tomorrow!

Disappointed
I can't believe the diners who raved about this place ate at the same restaurant my cousin & I ded yesterday(5/25/09). It was her idea; and since I love Indian food & buffets, I agreed. The food was fine...lots of choices. But...my place setting was missing a napkin. I asked for one, but finally took one from another table. No one asked if we wanted a drink; I finally asked for a Wine List. We had to ask for our dirty plates to be removed, so we could go back to the buffet. No one ever asked if I'd like another glass of wine. While we had dessert, again, no one asked if we'd like coffee, or tea. The bottom line is...I didn't feel welcome. I eat out a lot, and the service is mostly friendly and helpful. Here it was to say the least, haphazard. I wouldn't go back there, or recommend it. There are too many other restaurants that make me feel comfortable to go to Darbar Grill again.

Great Party!
I had my parents 25th wedding anniversary in their private party room on the second floor... We were a group of 64 people and the way Darbar Grill handled everything was simply amazing. From the time we arrived 'till we left, they handled everything professionally. The food, service, and ambiance was outstanding. Great job Darbar Grill!
