Le Grand Dakar

There is much potential with this restaurant, but they really need to focus on what they need to do right to make this work. I went on a Saturday night and a band, Kakane (sp), was playing. I really liked the band, but it was a bit loud if sitting near them. I was eating alone and it took 20 minutes for me to get my drink. My appetizer came out 20 minutes later. My meal took another 30 minutes. I was to meet a friend for a movie so I ordered my dessert to go. I waited 20 minutes for that AT THE BAR! I loved my food, but I have not been willing to give this place a chance because Joloff and Kuer N Deye are closer, cheaper and quicker than Dakar. They need to focus on getting their kitchen up to speed. It wasn't full that night and a person eating alone shouldn't take two hours to get a meal! They were short waitstaff. One guy was doing the dining room. The bar was packed and I felt that more focus was on the bar the the diners. If you have plenty of time to linger, then try it.

I've been to Dakar several times and I'm never disappointed! The Piri Piri Shrimp is always outstanding! the kafta is excellent... this is where i overdose on my monthly lamb intake because the Lamb Yassa is great! i really like their special martinis and the staff is very friendly too. never disappointed...

My fiance and I have lived in the area for several years now, but only just discovered Dakar. Oh.my.God. This place is amazing...the chicken mafe (chicken w/peanut sauce), the pastels (fish dumplings)...everything tastes awesome here. I don't even like scallops, and my fiance forced me to try these because he said they were unlike any others...I nearly died, they were so good! I know it seems like I'm gushing, and whenever people gush on here their reviews seem "suspect", but I'm sorry, I'm gushing because the food is so damned good and I just want to spread the word. Another great restaurant here on the Hill (or here in the Greene, or whatever).

I was pleasantly suprised to discover this restaurant in clinton hill and was excited by the lovely decor and ambiance. I ordered a peanut chicken dish. The chicken turned out to be somewhat dry and bland. The peanut sauce was good, but not enough was used, and nothing was properly marinated. I would also skip the house beer, as it was not very good. Overall, if you're interested in something a bit different and you don't expect too much, go for this place.
