Dafni Greek Taverna

Looking for a restaurant close to an off-broadway theatre during the week, I came across this on Menu Pages. Based on the previous reviews, it sounded like a no brainer and going on to the restaurant's own website, clinched the deal. The menu looked great and the prices extremely reasonable. I couldn't imagine a "nice" restaurant across from the Port Authority squished in between the schlock, but it's there. Clean and friendly, waitstaff extremely helpful and hospitable. The octopus melted in my mouth, and the appetizer spreads were extremely tasty. Good that the waiter note the strong use of garlic, but it was worth it. Definitely going back - hope they stay for a long time. By 6:30 p.m. the place started to fill up, become a bit noisy, but given the food and wine, it was well worth it.

Met and chatted w/the chef today. Formerly of PERIYALI! Friendliest and most efficient staff ever. Great Manager Tony(?) Today: Tall glass of complimentary red Greek wine - delish! Spanakopita - light, flaky fresh feta/spinach triangles (3) w/tzatziki, and fava spread w/caper, red onion flecks. Yum! Last wk - the 3 spread appetizer PIKILIDIA(?): Fava spread, the most fabulous taramasalata I've ever had (even in Greece), and Skordalia - heavenly, dotted with caper, minced onions, herbs, sliced tomatos, 3 dolmades, 3-4 cured kalamata olives ,piles of fluffy freshly baked pita. Another yum. ISLAND SALAD: A taste sensation: super fresh mesclun greens, baked, hot houlumi cheese strips, fresh dried figs, grilled fennel, moutarde vinaigrette, w/fresh baked pitas on the side in a huge bowl It's a salad, it's a meal. Faaaantastic. Since I live a 1/2 block away, I intend to eat every one of their dishes....it's THAT good. And REASONABLE! Just a matter of time. Rave. 5 Stars. For Real. The Real Think with a smile. Enjoy, my new foodie friends. Next week -BRANZINO!

Preparing to see Mamma Mia, with its Greek environment, we planned on eating Greek that day also. After reading reviews of several Greek restaurants, we decided on Dafni's. We were the first ones there, got Gus as our primary waiter, who answered all our questions with preciseness and knowledge. First, the drinks. We normally drink Zinfindel, and he came over with two glasses of wine sampling. After sampling we decided on our choice, which Gus said was sort of a combination of white and red. Than we settled on the appetizer which was Pikilia, a choice of any three spreads, with Dolmades (Grapevine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs). It was a spread of baby eggplant, garlic, olive oil, lemon, a spread of cheese with spices, and a garlic spread which was like garliced mashed potatoes. All this with fresh warm pita bread. The appeteizer was a meal in itself. For entrees, we settled on Span akopita (Spinach and feta pie), and the traditional Mousaka (layers of eggplant, potatoes, ground beef, and bechamel sauce. Outstanding. I would have opted for the Baklava dessert, but I let my wife decide, and she settled on a large bowl of rice pudding. Delicious. Naturally, with the all Greek theme, I order Greek coffee. Very strong, and thick in a demi tasse cup. Then full of Greek cuisine, we headed off to our play. I would absolutely return. Opa!!

Went on a whim last night before a broadway show. Service was great from the start as I told them I had to be out in an hour. Our waiter Theo was wonderful. He brought us wines to try when we could not decide, helped us with our order in terms of what would take longer to cook and was an absolute pleasure to be around. Appetizers were the grilled octopus and the Greek salad (both were great and made with very fresh herbs). Main course was a whole grilled fish with herbs, olive oil and lemon....yum! Dessert wine on the house and we were off to our play. I would come back here for dinner again when I have more time to try other items on the menu.

Wow... Its not often you go to a restaurant and all aspects of the meal are a success. The food- diverse menu, good portions, tasty high quality food. The service was not rushed and was impeccable without being overbearing. The waiters seem to genuinely be interested in that you are having an enjoyable experience. Ambiance- wooden decor, nice tasteful decorations, low lighting but not too dim Prices- slightly below market prices relative to the competition- big draw in this economy I definitely will be going back again. It is refreshing to see good service and high quality food at reasonable prices is not an extinct concept.

Had dinner here this weekend. The food was excellent, authentic and affordably priced. I would recommend the octopus and greek spread appetizers as well as the grilled fish.

I am not a lover of exotic foods. I stick to what I know. I went out with some friends and they wanted to try this restaurant. I wasn't too sure at first because I am such a picky eater. I have to say that I was impressed. I tried new things and I like it. The food was very good. The price is reasonable too. This restaurant is definatley one of my new places to eat.
