    The Worst of Posh L.E.S.

Cube 63 begs the question: How high a price are you willing to pay for abuse? This restaurant made me long for the days when Clinton Street was a heroin supermarket; then, a robbery consisted of losing 10 to 20 dollars at the hands of a thug, not a few hundred at an ostentatious restaurant like Cube 63. Any praise that the food deserves is offset by the unresponsive staff, the extremely small, overpriced portions, the cramped, hot atmosphere and the loud, obnoxious clientele who represent the worst of "Lower East Side" chic. Even after running up a 300 dollar tab, we were asked to leave after an hour because there were other, more fitting people waiting for the table. Might I say that Cube 63 is BYOB, and most of the other people in the joint were sitting there from before we came in, and were still there after we left, drinking their own booze that did not benefit the restaurant in any way, shape or form. I guess they have misunderstood how a restaurant earns money. I will never go back to this place, and will discourage my friends from going as well.

    hostess is not cool

made reservations ahead of time, received a text the morning of to confirm, but when we arrived at the restaurant the devil hostess tried to tell us that we didnt have a reservation, even though i could see our name and number on the sheet she was trying to hide from us. the service is so bad, its laughable. literally-they laugh at you, cant be bothered with giving water or napkins and even gave the earmuff sign when asked a question. ive never posted a review on a site before, but felt compelled after our experience last night. the owners should be embarassed by their staff.

Tiny Portions + High Prices = Annoying

The prices are actually pretty standard, but the food is tiny and mediocre food compared to what's out there. I spent $25 on an order of gyoza and 2 rolls (including the $10 special volcano roll, which had advertised crab meat, but was in reality cheap crab stick). What I got when I opened the take-out bag was 4 soggy gyoza (only 4?), a 2 miniscule sushi rolls. A royal rip-off.

    staff unknowledgeable, crab app bad

this place has slipped so much over the years. just look at the zagat ratings they were once a 25, now a 21 for 2008. i can't stand the noise level at night (you have to literally scream over awful blaring music), so we went early. the rolls were good, but overpriced. they seem to make up for the BYOB in the prices of their food. the volcano roll is great, as is the pink lady. the barbados roll is not worth the $14. the worst was that the staff was not at all friendly and pretty unknowledgeable. when i asked about a roll, they basically read me back the description that was written on the menu. thank you, i know to read. do NOT order the soft shell crab app. worst $13.50 i have ever spent. i asked how it was prepared and the waitress said, "fried". i assumed pan fried, but it was deep fried, drowned in panko breading, so the batter was almost as thick as the crab body. the one crab was also TINY. i asked what kind of sauce it came with, and i got a "yes, it comes with sauce." what kind? "i don't know, chef's special sauce". by the way, which is just the brown vegetable sauce you buy bottled, and they serve with all japanese panko breaded dishes (like tonkatsu), which also overpowered the crab. there was a streak of sricha (sp?) on the plate, but that's about it. it was like eating over fried panko crumbs with two sauces i have in my fridge. couldn't even taste the crab. awful. if i had gotten a better description from the waitress to begin with i would've never ordered this dish.

    Great Sushi - Atmosphere lacks

I cannot believe all the negative reviews I'm reading about this place! I've been here maybe 15 times & the sushi is to die for...by far the most inventive rolls I've enjoyed in NYC. The 63 roll & the volcano roll are staples for me every time I visit. The sushi is always very fresh & while the size of the rolls are on the small side - I have never been disappointed. I will say this - don't order anything other then sushi - the one time we tried this, we sent the meal straight back, it was not good. The atmosphere is very cramped, simple & loud - I reccommend the sushi bar (or, if you don't mind the trip to brooklyn - the atmosphere there is much better & the sushi equally good). Overall, probably my favorite little sushi joint in the city for it's value & I've been EVERYWHERE.
