Wine List Amazing, Food Disappointing
This may be a wine lover's restaurant, but it is certainly NOT a food lover's restaurant. While the meal featured quality ingredients, the preparations were not at all inventive and the flavors were bland and unimaginative. Also, the cheese course was an abomination there were only five cheese to choose from and the selection was run of the mill (e.g. stilton) and nothing you couldn't get at a mediocre supermarket cheese case. I would not recommend this place unless you are planning to get so blitzed that you can no longer taste anything.

An Amazing Food Experience
Our meal at Cru was well balanced and delicious. The small plates served between courses were delicious and exciting. The petit fours at the end of dinner were also tasty. Although it was not the most innovative meal we have ever had, it was well uted, finely seasoned, and very satisfying.

Amazing Birthday Treat
Would highly recommend this restaurant. It was my boyfriend's birthday and they couldn't have been nicer. They seated us at a fantastic table and took extra care the whole night. The waiter was the most knowledgeable I've seen (and I've been to all the expensive usual suspects). Of course you are paying a lot, but it is worth it. We ordered the chef's tasting menu (customized to what you like but basically whatever he decides to prepare) and it was amazing. At $145 per person for five courses it wasn't cheap but nevertheless unforgettable. The pasta is out of this world. They customized the menu for me as I'm a vegetarian, and it was the best high-end vegetarian food outside of Paris I've ever had. Definitely would come back again.

Off the charts!
We aren't picky people, give us a table with two seats next to each other and some edible food and we'll consider it a good meal. But on a special day when we wanted a special meal, we chose to turn it up a notch and hit up this 5th avenue gem. We went with the 3 course price fix, and it did not disappoint. It was more like 6 courses, as they brought 3 complementary (albiet small) courses to the table courtesy of the chef himself! We were going to a show and were a bit pinched on time. We told the waiter at the beginning of the meal and every person who came by afterwards was cognizant of our time constraint. The staff was courteous, efficient and made us really feel at home with a personal touch that we've never seen anywhere else. This place is also known for its wine. We know nothing about fine wine and the 2 300 page wine books (one for red, one for white) was completely wasted on us. The wine expert helped us pick a wine by helping us identify what we would like based on our preferences and food choice (and did it in laymans terms so we could understand).... Anyway, the food was off the charts, but really this was a meal, where the service, above all, will be what made the meal for us.... Thanks CRU!

Spend you money somewhere else
With all the great "expensive" restaurants in New York go ahead and skip this one. I have wanted to go there for a while but now I wish I had chosen another spot to celerate my anniversary. The wine service was great as was our waiter but the food, (besides a pasta dish which was excellent,) left a lot to be desired. For a grand total of over $400 for two ($200 for the food alone) I expected a lot more.

Hidden Gem>>>
WOW!! Having heard about this "Wine Lovers Restaurant" a few years ago I was always curious. We showed up for our reservation and were seated in a timely fasion and from there on, again, WOW! Food, creative and perfect, Wine, perfectly chosen and served and the Service, casual, professional and proper. The decor did leave a bit to be desired, but not bad. Desserts were the highlight, for me, and was told a new pastry chef was just coming to his own. Saw Howard Stern there too, that was fun!!

What happened?
Having been to Cru a year and a half ago, I went again expecting a great meal. Something has slipped! First of all, the service was impolite and rushed. The manager stood with his arms crossed and glared across the dining room and at his employees. The food was not a great as I remember it being either. The pasta was overcooked and under seasoned and the fish was slightly dry. Also, the desserts have changes as well. For the worse. But the prices have gone up. Not the experience I have had in the past or that I would hope to have in the future. I may not choose to spend my money there again.
