Decent food, Kitschy Joint, Service OK

I have pretty high standards when it comes to service. While it wasn't bad here, I wasn't blown away. One of the greeters/hostesses was a little snooty about seating us as an "incomplete party" even though we had a reservation and our guest was to arrive in 3 minutes. My husband must have looked like he was about to do/say something, because another hostess jumped in to intervene and seat us, shooing the other away. Our waitress seemed really disinterested in general. While I wasn't expecting a Texas-style howdy-type demeanor, this place seems to promise a certain environment of laid-back comfort and down-home friendliness in the sometimes seemingly unfriendly NYC. Instead, I had the feeling that our very NYC waitress was being held hostage in a country nightmare from which she had no hope of escaping. The food didn't knock me out, either. It was good, but not great. Portions were huge. I had fried chicken (crisp batter, good texture, no oomph), and my companions had the ribs (a little dry) and mac and cheese (desperately needed salt). All were just fine, although I kept thinking that I could have a much better "country" style meal at that highway joint Cracker Barrel. But, the novelty of having this sort of meal in NYC is part of the draw, I suppose. But either the food, service, or kitsch factor needed to be more over-the-top to give me a reason to go back. The baked potato dessert is very cool. Although, we were 4 and she brought only 3 spoons, which was odd. The price was fair- I think our bill (3 adult entrees, a few beers, sodas, and dessert) was $80? Not bad.

    The best food and service...Ever!

I had such a wonderful experience here. The person at the door was a bit smug, but everyone else we encounter was a pure delight. They were attentive, friendly and extremely helpful. The food can definetely blow your mind... it is so good! Also, they sell the down home food that we all know and love, so you really don't need a translator or map to order yourself a fantastic dinner. The Frito Pie and The cowgil's Bake Potato dessert is a must for every meal.

    Hello, Over Here, Please!

The food is very tasty and jumping at this place, but the service--oh my! For the earlier reviewer who's been coming here 10 years, either you have been very lucky each time, or I was very unlucky two times. I don't ask for much--some water, utensils, and a menu to start would be nice. I got all that. But trying to get someone to take our table's order--well, it was easier completing my undergraduate degree. If this is what we're supposed to expect and take with a grain of salt just because it's a restaurant in the Village, well, then, I fear for the Village.

    Good Food, Good Times

Excellent, fresh guacamole, very tasty hangar steak, and a tangy pulled pork burrito made for a very good meal. Our server was efficient and just a little bit kooky as befits a restaurant in the Village. A good time, a good price and a nice surprise.

    Fantastic

Great food, great service (from the girl who had visited Glasgow, Scotland) and fantastic value for visitors from the UK with the weakness of the dollar. Nice sense of irony and not too "yee ha". Great portions, nobody finished their meal. See you in a few months.

    Always Lots of Fun

I'm surprised by the "reviewers" who received rude or poor service. That has never happened to me in the 10+ years I've been going there! The food and drinks are good, the service efficient and friendly -- all in a very fun atmosphere. Don't expect gourmet food -- just good ol' down-home cookin'! And by all means, bring your amigos!

    Always Fun

I always have a good time when I go to the cowgirl hall of fame. The brunch there is excellent with many choices including delicious specials and they have the friendliest bartender, in all the time I have been going there I don't think I've ever seen him frown. The wait staff are very sweet too.
