Took a turn for the worse
I have been going to counter since it opened 6 years ago. I have always loved it - have had some special events there, know the owners and have been to Deborah's rooftop garden where most of the herbs and other veggies are grown. I went to counter last night, the first time in several months, and was thoroughly disappointed. The menu has changed, replacing my old favorites with thrown together, dry tasteless, under or overcooked crap. I had the broccoli rabe which had very few greens but lots of this root vegetable that tasted like an undercooked potato. The butternut squash ravioli was tiny - two tiny little pieces of undercooked tasteless ravioli. The grilled eggplant was undercooked and cold (which the menu did not indicate) very rubbery and gross. The crispy artichoke flatbread pizza was the poorest of all - deep fried artichoke hearts, poorly seasoned, oily and dry at the same time. They resembled fried grasshoppers or something alien to my palate. I am thoroughly disappointed with their new menu and I do not recommend going to this restaurant until they change the menu or get a new chef. Incidentally, they are not under new ownership but do have a new chef which is the most probable explanation for the drastic change in food quality.

New Owners?
Went by last Saturday around 9pm. The place was completely empty, the real nice maitre'd wasnt there, but we sat down anyway. We had only come for the teas and vegan chocolate foundue, but alas, both had been cut from the menu. My guess is that there are new owners running the place and are trying to cut costs, but can't be sure. All I can say is that I won't be back.

My Favorite
I adore Counter, especially for dinner or brunch. My favorite dish is the Tuscan eggs with vegan mushroom sauce -- you'd NEVER guess you're eating something that doesn't have meat. Everyone who works there is incredibly nice. I'm a HUGE fan favorite.

No good
After hearing good reviews, I took some friends here. Everything except the appetizer was inedible, dry and tasteless. People were trying hard to choke down their food for the sake of politeness. The portions aren't that big, but no one could finish. I was completely embarassed to have been the one to suggest the restaurant.

good not great
went with a large group-mix of ages, veggies and non veggies. We all had a pleasant though not great meal.Service was very pleasant.I would recommend the small plates such as risotto, artichokes, and wheatberry salad. The large plates especially the pizza was not as good.Nice wine selection though a bit pricy.

give me a break!! this place is great!
tried counter right around the time it opened, maybe six plus years ago. wasn't impressed, and did not go back until recently. what a shocking, pleasing, great new experience! everything is so fresh and the options are unlimited. and the desserts rock! when i ordered the housemade ice cream, i definitely got three big scoops. plenty of decadent and seasonal fruit choices! do yourselves a favor, check this place out. i'm glad i gave it another chance.

Excellent Food, Nice Atmosphere
I went with three other people and we all had an adequate amount of food, so I'm unsure about the portion size complaints. My girlfriend and I each had the lentil loaf (delicious!), her mom ordered the cauliflower risotto (not my thing), and a friend ordered the veggie burger (looked good). There isn't much of a selection, so be warned if you're with picky eaters! I didn't even make it to desert and I would go back for a nice occasion.
