    Fantastic dinner!

I'm not a vegetarian, but i'm trying to eat healthier so i decided to try out Counter. I had the squash spaghettini and it was absolutely delicious. We also split the brussel sprouts and pommes frites which were a perfect add-on to the meal. I wish I had room for dessert! I will definitely be back!

    love it!

went to counter many years ago and wasn't too impressed. heard they had new chefs doing great new things, so gave it another shot. awesome! being a vegan for over 15 years, this is the kind of food i've always wanted from a vegetarian restaurant. great, local, seasonal food that speaks for itself. best veggie burger ever! and every single dessert is amazing. can't get enough of this place!!! brought my family who were a bit skeptical about a vegetarian place, but who left smiling and asking to return with me the next time! which will be very soon...

Why did they change the ENTIRE MENU?

Counter was my go to Vegetarian place in the EV. I would bring my carnivorous friends and knew that they would be satisfied as well. This was my absolute favorite vegetarian restaurant. I went there two weeks ago to celebrate my birthday and NOT ONE item remained on the new menu. Yes, there was hummus but it was completely different. Small and served with white bread. The food was not good. Did they change chefs? New owners? A huge disappointment. I am never going back there again. What a waste of a completely amazing place. :(

    Will not return

I can't believe how the menu changed for Counter. I have been going there ever since it opened and my last visit was a huge disappointment. They have changed the menu to be more geard towards tapas but believe me these will not fill you up. Overpriced and very small portions. Your stomach and wallet will feel empty when you leave. They need to change the menu back and put the Lentil Loaf and other filling items back on there. Highly disappointed.

What's up with the new menu

Been happily frequenting this establishment for a number of years. Apparently they have switched their focus to an entree based menu to a menu that focuses on small plates (some entrees are still available.) My friend and I decided to share six small plates between us. While the dishes were decent, it appears the chef relies too much on added salt. The mushroom martini (soup) was more like salt soup with a bit of mushroom. After finishing our meal and spending seventy dollars, we both were still hungry and decided to polish off a couple falafels at Mamoun's on St. Marks. It appears the new strategy is that this focus on tapas will increase profit margins by decreasing the food and increasing the price. The small plates are the perfect size but the price is so high that two people would need eight plates to be full (with a cost after taxes and tips of about 90 dollars.) What I would do different is decrease the salt in some dishes, drop the price of the small plates by two dollars each, and offer a special price on six plates and two desserts.

Took a turn for the worse

I have been going to counter since it opened 6 years ago. I have always loved it - have had some special events there, know the owners and have been to Deborah's rooftop garden where most of the herbs and other veggies are grown. I went to counter last night, the first time in several months, and was thoroughly disappointed. The menu has changed, replacing my old favorites with thrown together, dry tasteless, under or overcooked crap. I had the broccoli rabe which had very few greens but lots of this root vegetable that tasted like an undercooked potato. The butternut squash ravioli was tiny - two tiny little pieces of undercooked tasteless ravioli. The grilled eggplant was undercooked and cold (which the menu did not indicate) very rubbery and gross. The crispy artichoke flatbread pizza was the poorest of all - deep fried artichoke hearts, poorly seasoned, oily and dry at the same time. They resembled fried grasshoppers or something alien to my palate. I am thoroughly disappointed with their new menu and I do not recommend going to this restaurant until they change the menu or get a new chef. Incidentally, they are not under new ownership but do have a new chef which is the most probable explanation for the drastic change in food quality.
