Corner Cafe & Bakery
Posted by Terre Berlen on 10/24/2012
I am visiting NYC from Toronto. My host suggested the Corner Cafe as it was a block away from the apt. I was shocked at how filthy the bathroom was, the tables, even inside the displays of prepared food. When I mentioned this to the manager, she nearly laughed in my face. "Eat somewhere else" was her response. Truly unbelievable! I sure hope people read these reviews and take their money somewhere else.

I stopped by for the first time ever because I wanted a good coffee. While inside I ordered a butter bagel and the ladies behind the counter made me feel like they were doing me a massive favor by getting my coffee and bagel. They might as well have robots behind the counter helping. The food was decent but good enough to make me come back to spend my money. Tell your workers to practice smiling at the customers... It goes A long way.

Inefficient customer service: staff is incapable of delivering a piping hot cup of tea in a timely manner.

I go here mostly for brunch. The corner cafe is a solid brunch place. The UES has a lot of extremely good brunch places, this is not one of them. However, though the food is not quite as good, it is still very respectable, and half the price of places like Sarabeths or Parlor. The waffles here are actually bad (what is it with city restaurants and bad waffles anyway), but everything else on the menu has always been quite good. On most days, don't expect more than a few minutes wait for a table for two. The room is pleasant, and typically not too loud. The large windows make it easy to people watch while you eat, which is nice. You can get in and out of here for $15, so you can't argue with the price. One note, the service is very disorganized. The servers are all extremely nice, but the organization is lacking. In the ensuing chaos, sometimes things get forgotten or mixed up, and you can end up waiting a long time for food. This only happens about 1/5 of the time, but it does happen, so be prepared. Also, one humorous note. Almost every time I come here, I order a scone from the bakery, cut in half and toasted, nothing complicated. Fully 90% of the time, this particular order comes back wrong. Either the type of the scone is wrong, or it is not toasted, but they almost always get it right on the second try. This phenomenon remains something of a mystery to this day, but I take it in stride and it's not a big deal.

up until about 3 weeks ago we have never been disappointed at the corner cafe and bakery. however, on our last visit the lovely waitress who took our order did not bring the food to us, that was left to a succession of busboys who never gave the right dish to the correct person - the fish was undercooked, and few desserts were available. The coconut sponge cake was so cloyingly sweet as to be inedible. This was the first time I was ever dissatisfied. Will try again. Wish me luck.

I work down the block from here & regularly go in the morning to grab some earl grey tea and a snack. The staff is helpful & friendly, and the food is wonderful, especially since I hate my job, so this has become the highlight of my day.

Dressed casually, we were seated in the central lobby area, tall table w/ stools. I requested a table in the dining rm, but after server and hostess discussed it, she explained there was a reservation. So with a boyfriend that didn't want to cause trouble, we said "alright". But I really think the hostess should have offered us the next avail.table in the dining rm, two tables became avail in five minutes. Instead we had our brunch in the lobby area with alot of traffic, the food was presented well but spare, it didn't seem as good after that neglect and judgment of a young hostess. I do love all the pastries I've tried from the bakery on the same block. Didn't feel welcome and will not return to this cafe though. What a disapptmt, was looking forward to it. It's a popular brunch place for the UES, but not for me!!
