Good Lobster, but everything else average
Went here on Sat. night. Wasn't real busy, perhaps it's summer. The 3lb lobster was excellent, but the rest was average. Small portions, nothing exceptional. Service people were basically unfriendly. The wine list was extensive and very admirable, but when I went to order one, they ran out. All in all, not worth going to the other side of town, but would go back for the lobster only.

Pleasant Dining Experience
Compass is a very pleasant dining experience. It's very attractive and service is excellent. The food is quite good, although perhaps not as good as it should be. It's convenient to Lincoln Center and I'm surprised it isn't busier pre-theater. The prix-fixe menu is a good deal.

Very pleasantly surprised
My husband and I have lived on the upper west side for more than 10 years and for some reason we never tried Compass, until last weekend. We went for brunch, and it was easily the best bruch we have had in the city, ever. Not only is there an abundance of food in the prefix (important to my husband), but the quality and taste is amazing (important to me!). The menus are prefix, where you choose your main course, and various chef tastings "For the Table" are brought out for everyone in before and after. And the price is extremely reasonable. We can't wait to try out dinner!

New (Again) and Improved
I have been going to Compass for many years now, primarily because it is one of the very few restaurants in the Lincoln Center area that provides a decent meal without the almost unbearable noise level of places like its next-door neighbor, Cafe Luxembourg. I say "decent" because the restaurant has definitely had its culinary ups and downs. The last real up was thanks to John Fraser, now at Dovetail. Upon his departure, Compass faltered once more, and I considered not returning. But return I did, last night, to a very pleasant surprise. The decor has been updated, but the noise level is still very bearable. And my meal was truly excellent, starting with a yuzu-accented tuna tartare, and then going on to a totally wonderful Lobster Thermidor. The dish came with chopped lobster in a generous cake featuring couscous as a binder, topped by half a lobster tail, all sitting on two very tasty sauces, neither of which resembled the cheesy, creamy, gloppy Thermidors of Yesteryear. My dining companion and I shared a generous side of crisply battered broccoli which would even appeal to George Bush. Prices are quite reasonable, and the 3-course prix-fixe, at $35, is a steal. At this point, a must-try!

spectacular
My friend took me to dinner at Compass yesterday and I must admit it was one of the most memorable and pleasant dinners I've had in more than a year. Everything was good from the food to the service to the little touch at the end when they handed us a goodie bag...not to mention the great price for their $35 prix fixe menu !!! I am already planning my next dinner there!

Waste of Money
What a joke and ridiculous prices. This place is way overpriced and the waiters were as about as unfriendly as they get. The portions are tiny for what you get and the food was nothing to get excited about. There are much better places in Manhattan to go to.

Wonderful food, wonderful experience!
This is probably the most sophisticated restaurant on the Upper West Side. The staff is courteous, charming and attentive, the food is great, and the atmosphere very inviting. Loved it!
