My Favorite Japanese Restaurant
Been going to Choshi for probably fifteen years, and going at least once a week for about 4-5 years. Introduced two friends to it last year, and now the three of us go once a week. It's my favorite Japanese restaurant, and I live in Queens, nowhere near the place. The outside seating area is great in the summer, especially if you're facing north - so you get a view of Gramercy Park. To me, it's just a great combination of good quality food / friendly and welcoming waitstaff / very comfortable ambience / decent prices. If you plan to go regularly, and if you like a little friendliness in your waitstaff, it's up to you to make the first move. If nothing else, learn some names. They are 100% Japanese, which is great, but you can be going for a couple of years and some will still treat you with the reserved, polite formality of airline hostesses. On the other hand, if you can go in, smile, and say "Hi Eiko san!" (a totally made up name), the reserve will often melt away. No real drawbacks to Choshi, other than that you'll occasionally get customers with booming and/or grating voices that you can't ignore - the space is small and the tables are close together. But that kind of obliviousness you can find anywhere. I can't recommend any particular dish as all I ever eat there is sushi. But the salads look awesome, and anyone I've taken has always thought whatever they had was delicious.

This is not the Choshi of a few years ago
I live in the area and have been eating at Choshi for over 10 years now. Something has changed here from a management perspective, the hostesses are rude and don't care about customers and the rolls are hit or miss. They can only seem to get your delivery order correct about 50% of the time. The other 50%, your tough luck, because it will take you 20 minutes to get someone on the phone who actually can help you get what you ordered and paid for. The only thing this place has going for it anymore is the location.

excellent and fresh
I live down the street from Choshi, and go there on a weekly basis...It is always fresh, delicious, and has good to great service. The spicy choshi roll is out of this world (and I ask them to substitute vegs for the fish since I'm a vegetarian) and they do it! I have tried so many other sushi places in the area, and beyond, and nobody comes close to the quality, taste, and freshness of Choshi. Their Healthy Tofu Salad is amaaazing...the tempura is fresh and crisp and great...I can't really think of one negative thing to say about them.. I'd like to know what the complainers are comparing it to...

Our local place
We have Yama right down the street, which is of course a special occasion. But when I want a nice but not extravagant sushi dinner, I head to Choshi. The food is fresh (never had a limp salad and I eat here almost once a week) and the space is bright, with outdoor seating in the summer.

Puzzled
I'm a neighborhood resident and have been eating here for a few years. About a year ago they discontinued a special anniversay dinner that was such a bargain they couldn't continue it. But mostly, their food has bween fresh, tasty (the best seaweed salad in town) and the service pleasant. I cannot understand the negative revues, haven't been there for awhile and will need to go and test things soon myself.

Not recommended
Danger the sushi is not good. The salad tastes limp, and there is something wrong with the dressing. I was afraid to finish my meal. Beware.

Best Sushi in NYC
This is the best reasonably priced sushi in NYC. I go to Choshi 2-4 times a month. The waiters are friendly and helpful. The house salad is huge and the dressing is the best I have had. The spicy chsoshi roll and red dragon roll are the best. I highly recommend the restaurant.
