Chocolat Restaurant Lounge

Went to Chocolat with my date in July 2014. We had the fried calamari for appetizer. I had the BBQ baby back ribs, mac and cheese dinner with side of spinach. My date had the lamb chops dinner. The appetizer was fresh and tasty. The BBQ ribs were plentiful, meaty, a little dry but still very tasty and enjoyable. The mac and cheese was excellent. My date had the lamb chops dinner. The meat was tasty and tender. She said her dinner was excellent. The atmosphere and service was superb. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, I’ll give it a 9. Will definitely return.

Decor and ambiance is nice. Service poor, customer service poor and over priced menu for mediocre food. Had the fried chicken which was small in portion and just ok. My husband had the Jerk Chicken which was dry as hell and does not taste like jerk at all! Rice n peas were dry and tasteless. Where was the gravy? First and last time!

I was there Thursday 11/21/13 and the service was a bit slow. By that I mean the server did not come to me until I had been sitting there for several minutes and the establishment was not busy. Is it me or is a half hour for getting your appetizer too long? I was then afraid to order the entree as I had no idea how long that would take.

Let's begin with the appearance of the restaurant. Ambiance was quite acceptable; however, you cannot "eat ambiance!" You are there for the food. The food (there were ten in our party), was mediocre! There were a variety of dishes which were ordered...and some not acceptable. One in party asked they return the dish she ordered (shrimp on bed of lettuce). Bed of lettuce was piled high and surrounded by four lowly shrimp, which were neither large nor jumbo! She reordered another dish. Another had to have her fish returned for lack of preparation...NOT COOKED thoroughly! I ordered the "southern fried chicken." It was presented as balls of chicken--chicken pieces cut up. What was a tad dangerous to the teeth...were thigh and leg bone pieces in the poultry. (If one were to CHOMP down hard, a tooth, or teeth would be broken.) This is something which needs to be addressed--unless they are waiting with bated breath for a lawsuit, should this happen to one of their patrons. The chicken breast was overcooked, and it was hard. Service needs "dire improvement." Number one, NONE...none of the waters greeted us by introducing themselves by name. And, there were NOT any name tags on any of them. Some in our party had to ask to salt and pepper shakers to be placed on the table. None of the waiters walked around the tables to ask the guests in our party if everything met their approval or if we needed anything. Also, as for refilling water glasses a few in the party asked for refills. After the waiter complied..he walked away. Not once did he check any other glasses to see if there was a water need--that was, until I beckoned for him to return and to kindly refill my glass. Would I return to this place of business for another meal? No! Would I recommend Chocolat to family and friends? Emphatically not! Establishment should strive a bit harder in improvement in the aboved-mentioned areas--if they wish to offer QUALITY everything to their forthcoming patrons!

Disappointed on a Monday - I was at Chocolate (2nd visit) for an early supper only to find that they were out of several basic dishes. The tostones & Chorizos - none to be had. Vegetables - very, very limited. The lovely Shrimp & Avocado salad was served on non-descript greens which turned out to be Romaine. Really? You couldn't find plaintains or chorizo in Harlem? I won't even touch the vegetable issue. I've seen them do better. Lets hope it was just a fluke.

There was 11 of us and I had called for reservations, we came on a Monday and the atmosphere was great and the service was great, even though it was getting late and some of our party arrived late they took the time to make more bread, which was nice and warm. Most of the group had wine I had the Sangria was very nice salad was good, the chicken was very tasty. My group enjoyed and we will be back. Only problem and not the fault of the establishment is hard to find parking and that's why we were late we had come from a great Show at the Shomburgh. I can't wait to try the Shrimp and brunch menu.

The ribs were meaty and tender, tilapia perfect. stringbeans, never tasted stringbeans that good. Looking forward to eating there again. Will try the shrimps and grits on my next visit.
