If Only the Service Was Better

What an excellent value for restaurant week if you are eating alone. The appetizers and entrees are huge and delicious spicy beef and scallion dumplings for the appetizer and skirt steak for the entree. They could not have been better. The dessert was adequate, but I was not hungry by then and did not care. The service was unprofessional. I was seated at 3:45pm and the restaurant was not crowded. I was seated at a table near a railing, and the waiters kept reaching over the railing to deliver or clear. The food is so good and of such value that I will definitely return, but the management at the China Grill needs to get better waiters.

    Mediocre meal in midtown

First, the service was bad- we did not have one specific waiter which seems to have led to much confusion and left us waiting a long time to order. then, when we were waiting for our entree, someone brought us dessert menus. At other times, a waiter would linger around our table but not ask us if we needed anything. They are clearly disorganized which is surprising given how long they have been around. Also the prices are completely over the top. I am a New Yorker and am happy to pay $200 for a meal if it's worth it. China Grill is definitely not worth it.

    Pleasantly surprised

Read the review of this restaurant by our Hotel, and thought we would give it a try. Thought the menu looked a little weird, and almost didn't go in... but we were tired and hungry, and my husband said let's try it. I am so glad I did. The food was a nice combo of chinese, with an american spin. The chicken salad was huge, and absolutely delicious. The 6 veggie stir fry, and madiera spagetti was just perfect. We spent seven days in Manhattan, eating every meal out, (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and can easily say this restaurant was one of our favorites!

    always so good!!

I love China Grill. The salads are great to share and delicious. The steak and tuna are great (cooked perfectly) and the creme brulee trio is amazing!! You must try this if you like creme brulee. Also if you like sweet drinks, the mango martini is incredible, with fresh mango in the drink. Great place for a weekend dinner with a group or more intimate dinner weekdays.

Great food but maybe not worth the $

Atmosphere/decor is very nice, as the place is huge and cavernous. Definitely a trendy, see and be seen type place. For 2, we ordered the kobe beef tartar ($37) and Chicken Sate ($22) as appetizers and shared the Szechuan Beef ($40) as an entree. I found the appetizers much better than the entree, although my dining companion found the opposite. If everything on the menu had been $10 cheaper, I would have foudn the restaurant perfect, but while the food is very good, I don't know if it's necessarily worth the very high pricetag. We ordered the Chocolate Seduction ($17) desert, which was like a tasting menu of various deserts - that was worth it, if you love chocolate. I recommend the restaurant, but be aware of the price tag before going.

    Where's the duck

Ate there for first time. Sat at the bar and service was fine. Full menu but wine choices poor - One German Riesling by the glass that was just OK and no gewurztraminer at all. Special noodle appetizer was way pricey and duck salad though large had only a few slivers of duck meat. We will not be returning.

    Went downhill

I have been here a few times and always loved it. However, I was totally disappointed last night. The crispy spinich which used to be a treat was very greasy, and the lamb lacked taste and was dry. It is an expensive restaurant that has seen better days. Time to do something else with the space.
