Very disappointing
Wasn't eager to try this "name" restaurant that has obviously seen its heyday, but was invited by a visiting friend. I didn't see the final bill but whatever it ended up being, it wasn't worth it. Calamari Salad had few actual calamari. Shrimp Entree was fishy smelling and very salty. The dumplings were tasty but meager portion of only 4. The reason they do any business at those big prices must be out-of-towners afraid to venture out of the area and don't know any better. On the positive side, nice waiter and very roomy space.

much smaller portions...same $$$
I have been frequenting this restaurant for years. this used to be a reliable midtown spot. though the menu and prices are the same, the portions have been reduced DRAMATICALLY, driving the cost of dining here equally dramatically. it was never an inexpensive spot, but it was always fun to sample and share the dishes. so sad... i will not go back.

So disappointing
Totally agree with others who said it is nothing like it used to be. This was one of our favorite spots a few years back, but now it is just another overpriced times square restaurant with subpar food. We should have gotten the clue when our waiter said, "the portions are much smaller than they used to be. Think of our plates as a tapas." The szechuan beef used to be awesome, and for $46 it should be, but it was the thinnest little grizzly $8 sirloin you would get at your local grocery store sliced into six pieces and plopped on top of some sauce with a stack of straw onions on the side. We also had the drunken chicken and bbq short rib and both were just ok. I'm not sure what happened to this place but we will not be returning.

Been coming for years but....
Been coming for years but it is no longer the same restaurant that made it what it was. They say all the dishes are family style and the prices reflect that - meaning big portions. I was shocked having gone back and while many of the dishes are the same, the portions are 1/3 the original size. It definitely is NOT family style. There were four of us and we get the short ribs which came with only two small pieces. The peking duck salad was half the size and they forgot the duck! The tuna, cod, spare ribs and chicken sate were such tiny portions - really a big change from what it was. Service was still very good and so was the food but it is completely different than what's been there for years. Don't be fooled by the false family style advertising on the menu. It's not the same and overall was a disappointment. Now it is totally over priced for such small portions and outdated. Oh well, sad to say it but it is the truth.

Best service in town!
I just had an amazing business lunch at China Grill and it certainly did not disappoint. Our fabulous waiter chose a varied selection of appetizers to the delight of all. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, the entrees arrived and all plates were cleaned. He took care of everything and we ordered just the right amount of food , so I could enjoy lunch with my guests and not have a care in the world . Absolute luxury ! The lunch concluded with a selection of desserts ( a wonder we still had room ) but they were so delicious ..... A truly memorable time was had by all . Thank you , China Grill. I will certainly spread the word.

they shouldn't participate in "restaurant week"
China grill offer prefix menu for Restaurant week, but they dont let you know that you get only 1 main course and 1 dessert for 2 people. Although the portions are bigger, if I would know, I would pick different restaurant next time.

If you like Chinese food - don't go.
As a native New Yorker that has visited China and the Far East in general many times I went to China Grill at the suggestion of a friend, but against my better judgment. The name of this restaurant should certainly be changed as it has nothing to do with Chinese food. Very overpriced - even by New York standards. I ordered the beef dumplings which were too spicy to eat and the lobster roll which was mostly mushrooms and had a terrible heavy sauce on it. The staff was friendly and the service was good, but I went very late and they were not at all busy. Not like any Chinese food I've ever known.
