Bottom up
My kind of place to blow the corporate expense. Family style. Good place to bring my 'family'.

restaurant week
Given the economy I'm not surprised that many restaurants are extending the restaurant week menus, China Grill being one of them. The portions are HUGE and if you got the same items from the menu you would pay double which is pretty amazing. I just read the last review and really have to disagree...yeah it's expensive but it's way better than Tao which is bland and way to loud and tries to hard to be trendy and not on fresh food.

Not recommended
Now there's overpriced and there's overpriced. This falls into being completely overpriced. The food wasn't too bad but I'm not looking for 'not too bad' if I'm spending $45 on an entree. Especially if the place feels more like a sports bar than it does a place for fine cuisine.

Not like it use to be
if you want Pan Asian, go to Tao on 58th and Madison. China Grill isn't what it use to be. I took 8 clients there for lunch and the place was nearly empty for a Friday afternoon. Service was on the slow side but can't really complain. We had the calamari salad and fried rice with avocado which was good. Rack of lamb, tuna and cod also good but nothing to write home about. Crab cakes were less crab and more cake. I'd pass on it plus it cost a fortune.

huge portions I could not believe
I had never eaten at China Grill before, I guess it had slipped under my radar seeing as the place has been open for 20 something years... and I wish I had known about it sooner! The calamari salad is amazing, and massive, as is the ribeye... we also ordered a side of the cripsy spinach which I had heard raves about from a friend. It was kinda oily, but I guess that's to be expected when you deep fry spinach.. Never had an empty cocktail I needed replaced which was also great.. To full to try any of the desserts, maybe next time.

If Only the Service Was Better
What an excellent value for restaurant week if you are eating alone. The appetizers and entrees are huge and delicious spicy beef and scallion dumplings for the appetizer and skirt steak for the entree. They could not have been better. The dessert was adequate, but I was not hungry by then and did not care. The service was unprofessional. I was seated at 3:45pm and the restaurant was not crowded. I was seated at a table near a railing, and the waiters kept reaching over the railing to deliver or clear. The food is so good and of such value that I will definitely return, but the management at the China Grill needs to get better waiters.

Mediocre meal in midtown
First, the service was bad- we did not have one specific waiter which seems to have led to much confusion and left us waiting a long time to order. then, when we were waiting for our entree, someone brought us dessert menus. At other times, a waiter would linger around our table but not ask us if we needed anything. They are clearly disorganized which is surprising given how long they have been around. Also the prices are completely over the top. I am a New Yorker and am happy to pay $200 for a meal if it's worth it. China Grill is definitely not worth it.
