great neighborhood spot
Great food and very sweet service. I highly recommend Chili Thai for a great cheap dinner, especially because it's BYOB. The owner is really sweet - she really cares about the food she serves and is very aware of too much/too little spice. If you ever have a spice request, you just have to ask her. The basics are good there. On the more interesting end, I highly recommend the whole crispy fish with chili sauce. Plenty of meat on the fish - especially if you go all the way from nose to tail!

Totally Bland
Ok, so this is a pet peeve of mine. I hate it when Thai restaurants cook for an American palate since I go wanting and expecting spicy food. Chili Thai is a small hole-in-the-wall, I believe formerly occupied by Wondee Siam, but I don't care about that since it's all about the food. I do like that it is "bring your own bottle" since this allowed us to enjoy the wine of our choosing at low cost. The other night when we were there, the service was friendly, courteous and actually rather sweet. However, after receiving our appetizers, which were fresh and ok, the seafood salad being a standout, I had to request extra chili powder to get any semblance of heat. Because of this, I asked that my entree be "Thai hot" or very spicy, 4 out of 5 -- I couldn't have been any clearer. Still, it came out totally bland. They sent it back to the kitchen and offered to recook the whole dish. I told them it was ok to just add more chili and send the same dish back. It was then okay spice-wise, although it had a reheated quality. Everything was well priced/cheap and good size portions. My friend, who does not like spicy food, was very happy with his tamarind duck, fried calamari and salad. Mine was just okay. Caution -- If you like spicy Thai food, really emphasize that or your dish will be underspiced.

Excellent Thai in Hell's Kitchen
My favorite Thai restaurant in the neighborhood (and we've tried many). The Tom Yum soup is wonderful as are the curries and noodle dishes. It's a small space but a warm one. The motherly woman who runs it (the owner? not sure) is incredible welcoming, and really wants you to enjoy your meal. Regarding comments below about consistency, I've always found it remarkably consistent... there's a lot of bad Thai out there. And life is too short for bad Thai, so come here.

Best Thai in NYC
Both my wife and I love Thai food, and since we came to NYC we've been searching for the best restaurant where we can go regularly. The search is over. This place might be small (it's actually very tiny), but the food is great and the service is very friendly. Highly recommend their Pad Thai ...
