charming French cafe
I am guessing many of the reviews that mention the owner are from people who need to be coddled everywhere they go. They are also more than likely the types who would probably be better off at a corporate chain where they are given exactly what they expect everytime: fake niceties from drones, and a sterile version of cafe culture. For me, I prefer places like Chez Betty that actually have some life and personality to them. I stopped in this morning for the first time and it had a great vibe: quirky french pop music, the owner greeting each customer (many of whom seemed to be regulars), good coffee and food. I will definitely be back.

One of my favorite East Village Spots
Chez Betty is one of my favorite places in the east village. The food is on point, the ambiance and charm of the restaurant simply add to it. I highly recommend the quiche, the pate, and the lattes. :-)

thewoman of chez betty
i have been visiting there about once or twice a week, never sat down because i am always in a hurry and really just needed a quick cup of coffee. the gentleman working there is a nice guy, but the woman was rude. she once offered me food and i said "no - thank you". the next time i went, she said " its the person who doesn't like my cooking". i ignored it because i figured it was her way of being. i looked around to see what food she was talking about., she has absolutely no food. all she has are cheesecakes and doughnuts that look like rocks. it was convenient to go because i live across the street and i am a heavy coffee drinker. i walked in one day and said good afternoon. she rolled her eyes and [drop]ped and said"what?". i asked for a cup of coffee and she said "and no food, right?" she began telling me that i am not special and that she makes no money out my cups of coffee and that i should get my cups of coffee somewhere else. i started going to a store around the corner and paying half the price i spent at her place. the biggest advantage is that i am saving some money and the coffee i drink now does not leave the funny after taste of old coffee.

A real gem in the East Village.
I wish I knew what people on this site were complaining about..... My bf and I came here for a light dinner last night the owner couldn't have been sweeter, more welcoming, or more engaging. Food was great too - classic salads she makes herself, along with pates and sausages that were completely real. If you want to occupy a chair and type while you sip the same cup of coffee for six hours, please visit your nearest Starbucks and stay there. That'll leave places like Chez Betty for me.
