    Proceed at your own peril

Follow-up on recent review of buffet. No longer recommended. Previously they substituted regular long grain rice for Basmati rice—outrageous. Today, they only reluctantly replenished the tandoori chicken, long after we asked. There’s no excuse for that. We got there and only 3 pieces of tandoori chicken were left which we (3 of us) grabbed. About 45 minutes later, after 2 of my party left, I was able to get 2 more pieces of chicken when a small quantity was put out. I saw patrons who came in and left without ever having had tandoori chicken. Outrageous. There was one other chicken dish; not the usual chicken tikka masala, not their chicken croquettes, instead chicken cubes in saag. They seem to be just tossing things together. Aloo simla mirch (a mild three pepper dish), cauliflower dish, chickpeas dish. All sitting too long in the trays and not tasty. A lamb curry dish was good; fresh, tender lamb with deep rich spicy curry. There was plenty of lamb because many customers skip the lamb. Naan was skimpy too; while replenished, it was a rush job as the new pieces were almost solid white, not baked long enough(?). We will return as we are nearby and it’s the only game in the area and it is still a low priced buffet.

    Unforgivable Switch

We've gone to this restaurant (which used to be a kosher standalone and is now the old Dakshin from 89th St) for many years. It has always served fairly good food if not great (see previous reviews for both restaurants). Our most recent visit was for the lunch buffet, which we do monthly. In all the decades that I have eaten at Indian or fake Indian restaurants, no restaurant tried to serve regular long grain rice instead of Basmati rice. Why Chennai did that on this last visit is unfathomable--the savings in cost cannot be that big... Worse, that day every dish was watery; the sauces were not thick and were bland as well. The bread was not crispy even when served fresh (they were replenished when I started my my second plate). The tandoori chicken has not had a tandoori flavor in my last 5 or so visit and there was no BBQ/charcoal-like flavor either (as there had been in the past). All of the choices: saag, chickpeas, lamb curry, chicken tikka masala, cauliflower, lentil curry were bland, watery and unappetizing., Everything was fresh, and the price ($9.99 wknd) was right, cantaloupe was good. Service good. We will return, because this had to be an outrageous aberration.

    Great food & value-especially buffet

I got the buffet special to go-They gave me a container to fill on my own, and also gave me a container of rice and a very generous portion of delicious naan. All for $10. I had enough for 2 meals. It was delicious, will definitely come here again.

This is my third time ordering from Chennai in the last 2 months that I have lived in the UES, I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt because the food is good. So far every single time delivery has been over an hour, with this last time pushing an hour and a half. I called after an hour and they said any minute.... that was 25 minutes ago and I am still waiting. I dont live far either. I would absolutely go eat in for their food, I cant imagine that the service is that poor inside the restaurant, but they have officially lost my business as an order out restaurant.

    Groupon Meal

My girlfriend had bought a Groupon for Chennai since it was in the neighborhood. We ordered Chicken Tikki Masala and Seekh kebab as our entrees and they were both great. The seekh kebab comes in a special platter and the presentation is really cool. I will be ordering for delivery from them.

    The food was bad.

We had a Groupon. The food was bad. Poorly prepared. The meat was not eatable.

    Quality is back!

We used to love this little restaurant and then the chef left and the new chef was disappointing. After giving it a couple of chances, we gave up. We had recently heard that it was under new management and gave it a try again. Food is excellent, service is wonderful and we now have a great neighborhood Indian restaurant again! For all of you who used to love it and abandoned it, please go back - you will be so happy with the new management!
