Maybe the best in the city
Food is great. Totally vegetarian, so that may explain why prices are so good. Four people eat and drink very well and the check is around $60. I know one meat-eater who says this is the one vegetarian place he never regrets going. Everyone I took there loved it. The setting is not fancy. It's generally clean and all. But it's the kind of place for people who just like really good food. The service is good. The waiters are not the kindest of all times, but they are not rude either. They do what they do, and you eat. Simple business model. If you like Indian food, you will probably love the food there.

The Best Rava Dosa in NY!!!
All good things come in small packages!!!! This statement fits best to describe the best South indian food one can get in NY in this relatively small size restaurant. Total value for the price you pay. I have been there more than 20 times!

Only place to go
This restaurant is surrounded by Indian restaurants, yet this one keeps me coming back for more. It is not an upscale place, but the atmosphere is always good and the tables are filled. Their food is great and the service is very friendly. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a low key inexpensive tasty meal. The only negative is that your clothing will smell when you leave the joint, so beware.

Outstanding food, abysmal service
The food here is incredible. Both the dosas (South Indian specialty) or the north indian curries (which a lot of the south Indian restaurants fall down on, but this place is AWESOME) are excellent. However, the service is absolutely atrocious. Ranging from rude waiters, incredibly slow service, frequent mix-ups on orders, inability to apologize for mistakes, to arbitrary policies on delivery and credit cards. If it wasn't for the food being so incredible, I wouldn't go back.

Couldn't even order
I tried to place a delivery order. They wouldn't deliver 8 blocks away. Their loss.

Solidly good in all respects
I have been here several times (5 maybe). The service was always good. The only thing that they may have been a little slow on was coming at the end to give us the check (but we just asked). I don't know what everyone means about the decor. It is perfectly fine. It isn't super fancy but seems on par for a lot of similar Indian restaurants to me. I wouldn't be ashamed to take someone there. The food is very good. It isn't my favorite Indian resteraunt ever (I have eaten in a few non-kosher ones that I would say top it, though none of them was in NYC) but it is in the top 4 or so I have ever been too and definitely the top kosher one. It is very good food and reasonably priced. The portions are very nice. I always think Indian food portions look small at first but once you start eating you get stuffed fast. The dosas are huge but not my favorite thing on the menu. There is a large variety of choices here.

wonderful food
I have been several times and the food is consistently a knockout. I have worked in indian restaurants for years and know my stuff you do not go to authentic indian restaurants for service or atmosphere. You go for food and Chennai Garden is as good as it gets in the city. Try the paper masala dosi (a southern indian specialty), you will not be disappointed. The black chickpeas, one of the few places around you will find this, is excellent as well as any punjabi curry. Trust me, if you want fantastic indian food at an exceptional price and can "laugh off" hit or miss service, this is the place!
