Sautéed Mixed Vegetable Lunch Special . Too much salt but ok otherwise Tofu Szechuan Style Lunch Special - too soft and without any flavor .. had to throw it out

While the food was good, the service was quite honestly the most disappointing I've had in years. We sat with empty drinks for 30 minutes and watched as just about the entire waitstaff took a break at the same time, sitting at the table next to us. The food took almost an hour to come out, which would not have been as big of a problem if someone had come to us to explain that the kitchen was backed up, but in that time, no one approached our table. When we finally finished, it took forever to get the check. We were at the restaurant for 3.5 hours, and not because we wanted to stay and hang out. I would order take-out from here, but never go back again to dine in.

I've been a fan of Chef Yu for several years...Eating in the restaurant, ordering take-out and recommending the restaurant to others. However, my last visit has put me in a dilemma. I took 2 out of town guests to Chef Yu recently. We were a party of 3. The waiters were slow to approach the table and it appeared that there was less staff than usual. I had noticed this before the last time I was at the restaurant, but this time we sat there at least 10 minutes before the waitress took order for our drinks. I have no problem with the food, which I think is great. We arrived at happy hour, which gave us the opportunity to order drinks at a reduced rate. Our drinks came, then the appetizers. The entrees followed. When we got the check, I read over it. There was a service charge. Initially, I was surprised. Usually, I'll see a service charge for a large party. I should have questioned the waitress, but I was consumed by thoughts of taking my guests on their next tourist venture which was a walk up to the Broadway area. So we paid the bill and left. Days later, I'm still wondering why a service charge was attached to the bill. Did everyone receive a service charge? This experience may prevent me from going back.

Get the shrimp dumplings. The tangerine chicken, spicy diced chicken, beef with green chili's are also good. Extremely fast delivery. I order there at least once/week.

Love the curried shrimp. As with all Chinese joints you have your good and bad meals but 99% of the time the food is great and if not they have no problem fixing you something else. Prices for this area are good. Happy hour is a kee kee you see some of everyone in there. Love it.

I have ordered here many times over the course of a year and a half, and I have to say it has a lot going for it. If you've ever been to the place, it's actually pretty nice decor- modern/American/a bit trendy. But the food is only good about 65-75% of the time. It really depends on what you order, but I can guarantee that the small hole in the wall Chinese take-out place near my apartment in Hell's ktichen is more consistent than CHef Yu's. I ordered pepper beef once and it arrived practically burnt and so greasy it was inedible. All you had to do was take one look at it to know it was really poor. I can't believe they would send out food like this. To be honest, in the 20 years I have lived in manhattan, I have never had burnt Chinese food like this. SO order at your own risk. If you order take-out, I would inspect the food before paying the delivery guy. That being said, when the dish is good, it really is better than most of the Chinese places in Midtown-West. But they are not worth the aggravation of not knowing how crappy your food is going to be today?
