Change we can't believe in.
Charles soul food was always a good bargain.But recently I returned after some time & noticed some changes. 1st the price of the buffet went up from around $10 to $15. Secondly, they changed it to where you no longer serve yourself. Instead, you now have

Charles'--the best fried chicken in Harlem
Went last week w/ a friend from out of town. The chicken was excellent--moist, flavorful, excellent crispy crust--and the sides were very good. Ribs might have been a tad overdone, but still flavorful.

Slightly below mediocre
The chicken is not crisp, the greens were not delicious, and most everything else was over sugared. With the exception of the black eyed peas which were a little tough. The sweet potatoes tasted canned.

Bad attitude spot. Tasteless, not juicy chicken. fake corn bread. don't go out of your way.

I haven't been to Charles in over five years. The other day while riding by I noticed that Charles still had a uptown restaurant open. I immediately did a u turn to investigate. I was happy too see that the food still looked so good. I ordered my favorite

Finally a decent taste of soul food
I have tried every so called soul food place in Harlem and Charles Panfried is still the BEST. I ordered the southern fried chicken with mac n cheese and yams. The food was still delicious after all these years. The servings are large and the price for a

Excellent Pan-fried Chicken
Got this off of a "best of NYC" list for fried chicken. I've also been to several of the other places on the list and I have to say, while not as fancy as any of the others and farther uptown, this is one of the best fried chickens that I've tried so far.
