Carrot Top has been a staple in this community for years--long before there were any trendy restaurants catering to the New York Presbyterian Hospital community, so I give them credit for managing to hang in there and provide decent lunch fare in a hurry. There is nothing gourmet about the place, so don't expect anything high end. But their portions are big, service is fast, and counter staff and proprietress are always welcoming and efficient.

I kept being told how great this bakery was. I finally got there last Thursday and purchased tiramisu, sprinkle cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and a chocolate cannoli. Prices were somewhat reasonable until you taste their baked goods. The tiramisu is an absolute insult to the traditional Italian pastry. Overly soaked in some other kind of alcohol, sour cream, and very sweet buttercream-type frosting. I've had tiramisu cakes from supermarkets tasting better than that. Their cookies were so dry and crumbly that I threw them out. Then their cannoli is still sitting in my fridge because I'm afraid of how bad it will taste. This bakery is truly a disappointment and I will definitely not go there again or recommend my friends to go there.

I was craving for baked ziti so I ordered a plain one. I got penne pasta which was okay but not if you wanted ziti pasta. Anyway, it was one of the most unappetizing pasta dishes I have had -- the sauce was watery, I had a few bites and everything else went to the garbage. The next time I went back to the place, I told the sales clerk about my frustration. She responded, "That's how we make it; if you order baked ziti, you get penne pasta..." and she curtly turned around to the next customer. I think I had my mouth open for half a minute in disbelief.

I've been to this bakery/cafe 3 times so far, and I've left happy each time. First time went in for cake and coffee with my boyfriend. We shared a delicious, yet small, piece of chocolate cake and had cafe con leche. The cake was fresh and moist and my boyfriend loved it, the coffee was also nice and fresh and really hit the spot. 2nd time I went I purchased an entire chocolate cake for my boyfriend's birthday. I got a medium for $27. Think they charged me like $7 extra just for the writing on the cake which I think is crazy but I wanted the cake and the writing so whatever. Finally, we both just had dinner there b/c we wanted to try the food. My boyfriend had the baked ziti with chicken and I had the turkey burger on whole wheat toast with salad on the side. Each dish was $6.50 and the portions were huge, and looked lovely. His ziti was good but not memorable, and the marinara was very watery. My burger was pretty darn good, and had a delicious smoked flavor from the grill. The salad it came with was big and packed with veggies (iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, red cabbage and green peppers). I then had a slice if their carrot cake but it was so so. A little hard and the frosting was much too sweet. Overall I like the place a lot and will continue to frequent it.

OMG. They're food is too good. The fries are yummy and the chocolate chip cookies cheap but big. Don't go to subway and buy their cookies when you have these. Much Bigger, Crunchier, yummier, and the chocolate is soo melty good.
