    It's over...

I used to love this restaurant, but I fear that it has now "gone to seed", and living off it's once reputation as one of the great "family style" Italian restaurants. My wife and I patronized this place from it's first year's opening and were swept away with everything about it, from their huge portions to their delicious food to the service to their amazing value. But....no more. Our last trip there a week ago was so disappointing that we just knew...it was over. From the rushed, surly service of a shameless liar/waiter who made up a pathetic BS story about not being able to bring us better baked bread, (the foccaccio was doughy...under-cooked), to the sad presentation of the fried calamari to the obscene increase in prices for the same calamari, to the short pour of our Martinis. The calamari was dripping with oil, over-fried and half the portion of what it once was. Asking our surly waiter for an extra serving of the dipping sauce was like asking this guy for a loan. The one bright spot? The Caesar salad was still just as good as we ever remembered it, with ample dressing dancing with anchovies and garlic. The country style "pasta fazzoule" was insipid, with over-cooked pasta, bland gravy and a clearly lessened base of sausages and meatballs. The place was packed with tourists. Our first clue should have been when we got our table for two within ten minutes when we arrived without reservations at the height of dinner time, 7 PM. In years past, it would take us upwards of an hour to get a table that quickly at that time. Oh well....NOTHING lasts forever.

    A major disappointment. Never again.

I hadn't been there in a few months and today's visit reminded me why. I cannot speak for the one on 44th St, but Carmine's UWS has gone downhill over the past several years both in food quality and in service. My experience there today sealed the deal for me, I will not be going back. My friends and I wanted to enjoy a light meal on a rainy afternoon so we ordered the calamari, eggplant parmigiana and broccoli rabe and asked that it all be brought out together, something the three of us have done before. The calamari came and we dug in while waiting for the rest. Then a different waiter came and told us he was our new waiter and the other guy was off. We told him we wanted all our food to come at once and he said OK. Needless to say for the next 10 minutes we kept asking for the rest of our meal. Finally the broccoli rabe came but no eggplant. When it finally came, it was cold! We told the waiter and he got the manager. Then the drama began. The manager said he would take remaining half of the eggplant and have it reheated. I asked about the portions that each of us had on our plates and he asked if we want that heated too! Then he told us to put it all on one plate and he would take it back to be heated as well. We all declined. When he left, the waiter came over and said we would get a new order of eggplant. The manager returns and says we can't have a new order because we ate some of the first order and "then we'd be getting 2 orders"! Mind you, 2 of us stopped after the first bite and reported that it was cold. The manager actually pointed to my other friend's plate and said, "but she ate a lot of hers". (Hence we'd be getting "2 orders" if he replaced the cold food). I'll spare you the rest of the ridiculous details, but we finally got warm eggplant. By this time of course, everything else was cold and all of us had lost our appetites. At no point did the manager ever come back to check on us or ask if the food was to our satisfaction. The waiter did ask just before we got our $81 check. Overall, it was a horrible dining experience and the manager was the absolute worst! None of us will be returning to Carmine's UWS, EVER!

    Going Downhill

Visited last Thursday with NYC friends for the Osso Bucco. They have dropped it. Food not that good, salad which was pushed by waitress leafy but without substance. We had steak which was ok, but pasta was ok as well, but I do not come here for ok. The place was half empty, which for a regular (well as regular as you can be living 3500 miles east!) was worrying. Our NYC friends were also very disappointed. I will not now recommend this place to any of my friends in the UK who visit.

I would not order in again

had some friends for Friday night and decided to ordered in from Carmains upper west side. To start with - Food that i got (waited about an hour) was overcooked. Than - a $70 steak that I ordered was missing. i called the restaurant and was promised that the steak will be send right away. An hour later i called again trying to understand where my steak is. I got a very rude attitude from the manager. he suggest to send me a new steak, saying i should wait around 40 minutes. So i should expect the steak 4HR after my original order... Not a very nice Friday experience.

    Solid Italian Food

Carmine's family style dishes are all amazing. They know what they're doing with Italian food. The place is a little noisy and so crowded on weekends with bridge and tunnel folk, but it's a good value for a big group because they serve family style. Order the delicious chicken scallopini with lemon and butter over penne (for $10 more) and a big caesar salad and you'll be set for 4 ppl. The bread is so good too.

One of My Favorites on its way down...

I have eaten many times at Carmines and have always loved the food, atmosphere, service. We often go on birthdays or special occasions (Mother's Day, etc.). I chose Carmines this year for my birthday because, frankly, I had not been there in more than a year and was hoping that service had improved. But no, if anything, it has gotten worse. We went on a Saturday night, expecting it to be crowded, and also expecting to have to wait about 45 minutes for a table. The place was almost empty, with no customers spilling outside and being told that a table was ready immediately. This should have raised the "red flags." Our waiter was, well the best word I can use to describe him is "Bored." We ordered the calamari, which used to be good, but in the last few years has not been up to standards. This night was no different. They were "chewy" like rubber. We also had to remind the waiter that we asked for "hot and sweet" marinara. The baked clams were as usual "superb!" The dinner special, stuffed salmon was perfect. Unfortunately, we ordered veal parmagiana and they brought us chicken parmagiana. We also ordered shrimp parmagiana, which never showed up. We finally told the waiter we would take it home. The waiters and busboys came by to sing "Happy Birthday" to me, but the thrill was definitely gone. Next year: No Carmines.

    Fantastic Italian Resturant

We were recently in NYC and stumbled across Carmine's while on our way to our favorite Chinese resturant.Carmine's was celebrating their 20th anniversary and was offering bite-sized samples to people walking by the resturant.ONE TASTE and we were HOOKED-we abandoned our plans and made a quick detour into Carmine's-ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!! Eggplant parm.-out of this world!! Huge portions-served family style. Can't wait for our next trip to NYC-Carmines will be our 1st stop!!
