great atmosphere, terrible service
the food and atmosphere were both solid, yet the service was almost comical... we were asked if we would like to see a dessert menu minutes after we had ordered our main courses, and the food took quite some time to reach our table

local yum
have probably walked by it but never noticed it, but glad i finally scoped it out. it's a rare treat to find a local restaurant worthy of return, but canyon road deserves a thumbs up. the margaritas are potent and tasty, and the entrees delicious and good portions. i ordered a combo shrimp and tuna and portobello mushroom fajita, which was tasty and not too greasy. my husband ordered a special with steak, shrimp, and chicken sausage that he loved. we also ordered a salad with jicama as an appetizer, and all in all, for the price, it was a winner. and service was great. will definitely be back.

Not Cheap BUT Worth the Money
Though our meal was pricier then we ususally spend for Mexican food, the meal was great!! I started with a pomagranate margarita which was light and smooth and my husband had the mojito which was fresh though a little too full of mint for me. We had the seared tuna tostada appetizer which came with small slices of perfectly cooked tuna on a mound of lightly dressed greens. Our main courses were just as good. I chose the unusual duck burrito with a mole sauce. The duck was moist and the mole sauce was light but full of chocolate, cinnamon and seasonings. My husbands steak tampiquena was just as tasty. We even decided to splurge on dessert. The bananas and ice cream balanced the chewey dough of our sopapillas. We left the restaurant with a smile on our face even though we less money in our pockets. I would definitely return again!

A review from a regular...
Ive been here more times than I can count, and I'm never disappointed. I saw some negative comments about the host, which shocked me. We are always seated on time, and the one time we had to wait 15 minutes (it was packed), he comped us a free appetizer. The marguaritas and food are 10 times better than the other UES tex-mex staple-and the price is about the same! The fajitas are delish, the meat is always cooked well (as in its never over-cooked and tastleless). The atmosphere is cramped due to the small space and its popularity among the UES'ers. The service can be slow when its crowded, but certainly not unattentive. However, I will take slightly slow over being rushed any day of the week.

Not a place for seafood...
This place is Ok. The margaritas were good, but the caipirinha was too strong and missing some sugar. The sangria was a little bland too. As for the food, I guess the quesadillas are the best choice. Initially, I ordered the tuna, but they were out. Then I ordered the dish called Cazuela. The menu says it's seafood only, and the waiter explained that it was similar to a paella dish, so I ordered it. Well, I was happy when it arrived at the table. It looked very tasty. However, when I took the first bite, I realized there was chicken in my dish! I got a combination of shrimp, mussels, and chicken! I was e xpecting more like calamari and scallops in it, but no chicken! I was veery disappointed with my food!

What the #@%!
Everything was going fine at dinner, good guacamole and sangria, but no more than 2 minutes after the waiter picked up our dinner plates were we being told that the host needed the table and that there was a "timing issue". I have never been treated so disrespectfully at a restaurant in my life. When they dropped the check the waiter would come by every 2 minutes...no exageration, i checked my watch. The food could never make up for the disrespectful service at this place. Too many restaurants in NYC to ever go back here.

Always delicious
I've been here many times with different friends and relatives. Their margaritas are excellent and will make them to order if you're fussy as I am. Everyone loves their appetizers (esp. shrimp w. salsa verde, guacamole, etc. Their fajitas are excellent. The service is usually attentive. The bartender is very obliging. It's always a good place to go when you're in the mood for upscale Southwestern food.
