excellent everything
the atmosphere was gorgeous and romantic, the service was top notch and unhurried, and the food was beyond delicious. their specialty is seitan - so be sure to try a dish that includes it. very expensive, probably the priciest meal we've EVER had, but so worth it. special occasion anybody?

Too much soy and wheat!
Many vegetarians and vegans are aware that tofu and wheat not healthy food choices for many reasons -- yet it is difficult to avoid these two ingredients at this restaurant. I also found them very unhelpful when I wanted to eliminate soy and wheat from the dish. Also, incredibly expensive for what it is. The only thing going for it is that it is a pretty restaurant -- but that's it.

Awesome Gourmet Vegan Cuisine
This is the more upscale sister restaurant to Candle Cafe. The food here is equally amazing but served in a more upscale, quiet environment. Everything I have eaten here has always been delicious. Even my carniverous friends have enjoyed their dishes. The Candle restaurants have never disppointed.

Delicious with great ambiance
The is the best Vegan restaurant I've been to. I have some favorites in California but Candle 79 has it all. The ambiance is wonderful..cozy booths and dim lighting and great background music. On top of that you get what I consider to be a Five Star meal that just happens to be vegan. The desserts are amazing and you'd never know they don't contain any dairy. I go there evry chance I get.

Booooo
This was a very disappointing experience. After all the great reviews I was hoping for some awesome vegan cuisine yet what we got was less than good. Vegan dishes do not have to be over salted to have flavor- a concept foreign to the chef's at this place. The pasta dish was $24!!!! and it was about a serving and a half of OK pasta. I have been vegetarian for a few year and tried the Vegan gig for a few months- I have had good and bad veg. food- this may be one of the more disappointing.

I can't believe its vegan!
I loved dinner here last night, as did my non-veg friends. The menu choices were varied, everything was delicious, and I will certainly be back often to sample even more on the menu, though my next visit may be an all dessert visit, because their mixed fruit tart with dulce de leche really rocked my world. It's a great atmosphere - comfy and funky, quiet enough to talk and yet lively. The service was very well-informed and had great suggestions and feedback on the dishes. It's not an inexpensive restaurant, but is well within the prices of other good restaurants in the neighborhood, and given the quality and mindfulness of the food, felt to me like good value. A definite yes!

Worth every penny
I always find it very difficult to get good vegetarian food while I'm on holiday let alone in a classy restaurant so this is going to be on my list of places to visit every time I'm in New York. The food was delicious, our waitress was lovely and the ambience couldn't be bettered. I've been to some of the best restaurants in London, and, apart from one or two exceptions, there's usually only one vegetarian option on the menu (mainly rissotto - even some of best chefs have no imagination!) so it's nice to see a restaurant with such a varied menu. I don't think it's too expensive either (not compared to London prices anyway).
