The ideal restaurant for the contemporary vegan. Outstanding food, beautifully prepared with service and atmosphere to match. Try the Wild Mushroom Trio appetizer. Expensive, but worth it. Excellent wine list. May be pricey for those who've been eating oats and twigs, but appropriately priced for a high-end experience. Candle 79: The upper west side needs you.

I just wanted to let it be known that I had a great first time experience along with my friend who was very impressed with Candle 79. We had dinner on a Saturday evening. The staff was very nice and knowledgable about the food. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was perfect. I definately give it a 2 thumbs up and highly recommend it. My friend was very impressed with everything and definately wants to come back again in the future. I also plan on coming back the next time I am in the city.

Last night we tried Candle 79. The food was very good, even for a non-vegetarian like my husband. The Mushroom trio appetizer was very large and very delicious. The potato leek soup, also excellent. The salad was large and for main courses I would recommend their "signature" dish t he Seitan Picata. Really really good. We sat upstairs but there were booths downstairs and it is possible to also eat at the bar. The service was excellent at a level we are not used to here in NYC.

To answer some of the reviews below, I just went for dinner last night and found the portions to be filling and there was no bread, as one reviewer requested, but there was a small amuse-bouche brought out before the appetizer (two pieces of sushi in our case). The food was quite good. The flavors blended perfectly. And the waiter was attentive without being pushy. It's definitely too expensive for everyday but for special occasions, it's ideal.

Just got home and wanted to post the review. Great Food, Lovely atmosphere and wonderful service. Now for the negatives. It wouldn't hurt to put some bread, preferably, health or grain bread, on the table. Also, the portions are VERY SMALLl. Delicious, but small. I ordered the special appetizer of artichoke(s) - just one (1) artichoke heart. I would have loved a little more. I do not mind paying for what I get, and, dinner was very good. A keeper in my book - - but, PLEASE, try to put something on the table with our drinks, and increase your portions, if just a little!

There are many wonderful places to eat as a vegan in ny but this is really somewhere special. We were only here for 5 nights and this was the first place we ate at and all 5 of us agreed it was the best, yes not cheap but then then you are having a upmarket meal in a upmarket restaurant. The food was amazing and I only wish there were places to eat like this in England. Well done you made us feel special and gave us a very warm welcome to your city. I wish we had chosen your resaurant for another meal. Will do next time.

So my fiance told me that we had to go to this place for a friends birthday and I was NOT excited about going to a total vegetarian restaurant. Im much happier with meat and potatoes, etc. But when the food came out I was pleasantly surprised. I had the Seitan Piccata which was delicious. We also split multiple sides of polenta fries which were also delicious. That being said, this place was pretty expensive. I paid something like $120 for the two of us, plus tip. Now this may have been because of booze or something, but still, I walked out realizing that I paid almost two monthly metrocards for leafy compote. Id recommend this place if you're trying to impress a first date whose a vegetarian, but otherwise Ill be at the diner.
