    Lime, Lime everywhere

I had dinner at Calle Ocho on Sunday, April 3, 2004. Our waiter was wonderful, the atmosphere was terrific, but the food was absolutely awful! Everything...and I mean EVERYTHING from the cocktails to the appetizers to the entrees and dessert were completely DRENCHED in lime. Bitter, acidic lime! I couldn't taste anything else. Was the mojito good? Dunno...could only taste the lime. Was the crispy pork yummy? No idea, all I tasted was lime. Was the appetizer platter for two dreamy? Coulda been...if it wasn't overdone with...wait for it...LIME! I wont complain about the dessert being a lime-stravaganza...I guess that's the way it was supposed to be. Clue to Calle Ocho: Lay off the lime. I live two blocks away and will not be back. Too bad, really, as I have about two dozen guests visiting NYC over the next six months and would love to take them to a restaurant with such great service and atmosphere. If anyone from the restaurant reads this and can figure out who our server was, he was marvelous...give him a bonus!

    Great drinks & atmosphere!

This is by far one of my fav places on the UWS. the best traditional mojito I have had in the city. The food is a little pricey but delicious and amazing. Plus, the atmosphere is "downtown" without having to make the trek. A great place for a dinner date or to meet for drinks at the bar. The fried yucca root is every bit as good as when I've had it in Costa Rica, as are the plantains, rice and bean taco platter.

    Over rated

Good, but not great.. not by far. Good atmosphere, food is strictly okay. Drinks are good --- go to the bar and have dinner at Rain.

    Great new find!

A friend recommended this place to me and I am so glad that he did! This place is a real find. The front bar is small, and you'd never guess the huge dining room lies behind it, but suddenly there it is. The staff is knowledgable, and no matter how busy the dining room got my server was still there every time I needed her. When the food came I was shocked at the huge portions, and left stuffed after a great meal and sweet dessert! Can't wait to go back!
