I've been to Cafeteria at least 5 times and never been disappointed. The comfort-food cuisine is yummm-my and the waitstaff cute-as-can-be. This is a see-and-be-seen Chelsea institution, be it for brunch or a late-nite snack after cocktailing. Order the mac'n'cheese and you'll forget all about your diet! Regarding the complaints below about attitude, I didn't notice a thing. Sure, the staff knows they are hot, but then again, don't you too?

I recently visited New York from Scotland with my wife and was recommended to visit Cafeteria for some top nosh. I had high hopes for this restaurant and the food did not disappoint, but the attitude of the staff was a bit too much. I expected a bit of New York style attitude when in NYC but after arriving only 5 minutes late for our table (through typical NY traffic problems) we were made to feel like criminals!! We stood at the bar for half an hour like naughty school boys before our ?drama queen? of a waiter finally came for us. We then had to squeeze into our tiny table, which was so close to our fellow dinners that I felt I was joining them for a meal. Food was excellent but too rushed. The calamari salad appetizer was particularly good, but definitely not one for all you budding romantics out there, as it was a full on garlic overload. Another tip would be not to drink too many ?Sam Adams? with your meal, as there is only one restroom, which was constantly busy (not a comfortable experience!!). Overall a 3 out of 5 for me - There is better out there (without the drama queens serving up the attitude as well as the food).

It is a good place for good food. But boy, they have an attitude there. The host is almost funny in his arrogance. It was not worth the 30 minutes wait for brunch on a saturday. Plenty of other choices in my book. Overrated.

Breakfast is available all day - and breakfast was very good and really cheap ($6 for 3 eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast). Pallard of chicken also vg w/lots of delicious salad. Try it!

Have had very different experiences here... a few times for dinner with friends, it was a little crunched and impersonal. Most recently had a late night dinner with a friend and it was wonderful nice loaded drinks, the tuna was absolutely scrumptious, and our waiter loved pandering to his pretty little patrons. I've been dreaming of the tuna on a bed of polenta ever since. I drool as I write!

Brunch is great all other times the menu is limited. Great coffee & great bread. Have had mixed experiences here. I've gotten cold food with attitude & hot food with good service. The place is full of queens (employees & patrons) so if you're uptight forget it. Prices are right & have occasionally spotted a celebrity (Jennifer Lopez).

I have eaten here many times and I've always had a great experience. Everything I've ordered has been delicious and a great value. However, I decided to get a carry-out instead of waitng for a table and was really disappointed. The portions were half the size as usually - my salad had about two pieces of chicken in it and maybe one bite of cheese. My friend's burger was so small, the bun was completely soggy and thin and the vegetable awful. My suggestion - a great place to dine out by carry in from somewhere else!
