    greatly improved and highly recommended

i've lived in the neighborhood for several years and was excited about cafe veg since i'm vegetarian and there aren't many restaurants around here generally. it was pretty good, but i found everything was overdressed in sauce. but they must have changed cooks or something recently because it has greatly improved, and i've been ordering from them again regularly. it is a terrific value and they always have lots of great sides. i'm not really sure about the first reviewer saying that everything had milk, eggs, fish etc etc. i find that really surprising and frankly unlikely. perhaps he meant that food label said 'made in a facility that also processes, milk, eggs, fish, etc"? because nothing i have ever gotten there has tasted like anything other than soy or seitan.

    Not recommended

As a Harlem resident and someone who is a vegan, whom also happens to be allergic to meat/dairy, I was thrilled to come upon this restaurant. As I never believe anyone when they say the food is vegan, I kept questioning them as to what their 'chicken' etc. was made of out. All the waitress had as a response was, 'Everything is soy'. I must have eaten there a few times. The food was pretty decent and in Harlem, there isn't much to pick from. I didn't believe that everything there was soy. It couldn't possibly be as the chickens and other meats were different textures. I asked, 'this looks like seitan', which is a wheat gluten. I wanted to see the ingredients list since the server said again, 'everything is soy'. She had no idea what seitan even was. After much hassle, the waitress finally agreed to let me see the ingredients list, (she was extremely hesitant). When she brought me the list of ingredients, it was a book with pasted labels from packages. Every label, without fail contained milk, eggs, fish and other dairy byproducts. I said to her, 'You told me everything here was vegan!!!!' She replied with, 'Oh, I guess not. Well that's what they told us'. I got up and walked out immediately. I tried calling the owner a few times and I even put in a complaint to the city's department of food safety because one could become very sick if they were allergic. The owner failed to ever call me back and obviously doesn't care that he lies to his patrons! I will never be back and will continue to warn people of their food. If you are vegan - stay away.

    Fantastic food

Had lunch here on a tip from a friend and was hugely impressed. The place is dimly lit, in the basement level, and has a relaxed vibe about it. The staff are so, so, friendly, and really knowledgeable. Food is super tasty, not like at some vegetarian restaurants and the portions are huge. Really love the juice bar in the front and the juices are so fresh and flavorful. This place is really worth the hike to get here if you don't live in the area. I'll certainly be back.

    Fantastic!

Terrific food, fresh juice bar, great prices, nice staff. I get take-out, mostly b/c I don't want to sit in a restaurant with a TV on, whether it's loud or mute. Except for that, great restaurant. Hopefully they'll start their own delivery soon. Currently you have to call a separate delivery service which can take a long time. But I can't complain - it's a 5-minute stroll to pick up always satisfying food. Highly recommended!

    Gem of Harlem! Vegans Rejoice!

I always joke and say that I don't cook becasue Cafe Veg is my kitchen. The service is fast (usually about 10-15 minutes for dine-in or take-out), the staff is super friendly, and food is so amazing. My favorites are the chicken and burger-burger wraps, and the curried or barbeque duck. They also have amazing vegan mac n' cheese, and the best collard greens! All my friends are now fans of "The Veg" as we cll it, and I eat here from 1-7 times a week. Also, the value is great. Hail to the Veg!
