A Gem
I order in regularly from Cafe Joul. The food is consistently outstanding. Highly recommended.

Great food and service!
One of the best restaurants in NYC. Food and Service is very good and I come weekly for the great Mussels.

Great find!
This place is always bustling every time I walk by, so finally I took my family and some friends who were visiting from out of town, for a dinner last week. Now I understand the crowds. Every one of us was delighted with our meal. I had the mussels mariniere - it was a generous portion and everyone dipped their bread in to soak up the savory broth. The burger was a huge hit as was the steak frites. The foie gras appetizer and the cod fish were given raves from my husband. Our friends had been dining in some of the finest restaurants in the city during their visit, but they declared Cafe Joul as their favorite spot. It's a very warm and inviting space and prices were surprisingly reasonable given the quality. Tables are on the small side and perhaps too close together for some folk, but we loved the conviviality and the neighborhood feel.

Avoid!
I asked to substitute grilled chicken for shrimp on the Cesar salad for dinner, thinking that since the chicken is an option on the lunch menu it wouldn't be a problem. They charged me 23.50, the price of an entire chicken dinner (with pasta and asparagus) for a chicken breast on lettuce SALAD. Maybe it's my fault for not clarifying that the price would be in the same ballpark as the shrimp salad but I find the price and reasoning a little ridiculous.

Mmmm... yummy!
I went to Cafe Joul a couple a weeks ago with my family on a trip to NYC. We come into the area alot, and always fancy restaurants in the Upper East in general. We originally went in because of the cold, but found so much more than free heat. First of all the food was GREAT. I had the duck, first time actually, ever. It was a great portion size and the presentation was outstanding. The service was pretty good, we were there in a rush and I could tell the servers had their hands full. We met the manager who was hanging out at the bar and she was HILARIOUS... and made a swear to come back.. and we will!

Great Restaurant
I was pleasantly suprised by this restaurant. I went with my girlfriend and every one of our dishes were great. I thought the duck was exceptional as well as one of their specials, which was a butternut squash lobster soup. I can't wait to go back

A true gem
I have returned again and again to Cafe Joul over the years to enjoy the delicious, fresh and expertly prepared meals and relax in the warm, inviting dining room. My most recent visit did not disappoint. I chose a healthful salad which was tasty, fresh and light. Having left room for dessert, I selected the pear tatin with caramel ice cream. What a treat! While the light lunch was truly enjoyable, I have had many satisfying brunch meals and dinners there as well. Over various visits, my family and I have enjoyed excellently prepared steak frites, roast salmon and expertly cooked eggs . Cafe Joul is the kind of restaurant I wish we had more of on the upper east side. Top flight cuisine in an welcoming, low key atmosphere.
