Mmmm... yummy!
I went to Cafe Joul a couple a weeks ago with my family on a trip to NYC. We come into the area alot, and always fancy restaurants in the Upper East in general. We originally went in because of the cold, but found so much more than free heat. First of all the food was GREAT. I had the duck, first time actually, ever. It was a great portion size and the presentation was outstanding. The service was pretty good, we were there in a rush and I could tell the servers had their hands full. We met the manager who was hanging out at the bar and she was HILARIOUS... and made a swear to come back.. and we will!

Great Restaurant
I was pleasantly suprised by this restaurant. I went with my girlfriend and every one of our dishes were great. I thought the duck was exceptional as well as one of their specials, which was a butternut squash lobster soup. I can't wait to go back

A true gem
I have returned again and again to Cafe Joul over the years to enjoy the delicious, fresh and expertly prepared meals and relax in the warm, inviting dining room. My most recent visit did not disappoint. I chose a healthful salad which was tasty, fresh and light. Having left room for dessert, I selected the pear tatin with caramel ice cream. What a treat! While the light lunch was truly enjoyable, I have had many satisfying brunch meals and dinners there as well. Over various visits, my family and I have enjoyed excellently prepared steak frites, roast salmon and expertly cooked eggs . Cafe Joul is the kind of restaurant I wish we had more of on the upper east side. Top flight cuisine in an welcoming, low key atmosphere.

Best in New York
I travel to New York several times a year and Cafe Joul is my most favorite dining destination. The environment is sophisticated, yet cosy and relaxing. The food is exceptional -- superbly prepared and tasty fish, salads, and excellent sweets. Bravo to Cafe Joul !!!

worth the trip!
After walking by and seeing it bustling so often, I decided to give Cafe Joul a try with some friends. No wonder it is so busy. It did no disappoint! There was something for everyone on the menu. We loved it. Endive with manchego salad was delicious, steak and frites very good quality and a gourmet mac n' cheese that was incredibly rich and savory. Monk fish special was as good as any I've had in five star restaurants at two thirds the price. Wines were reasonably priced too and the service was friendly but never intrusive. It's great to find a place that has such good fresh food in a relaxed environment. Although I live on the west side, I'll gladly cross town for some more Joul.

a Hidden gem
We were pleasantly suprised to discover this delightful restaurant as we often don't make our way over to 1st ave..We had a delicious meal from the salad, entree to the AMAZING deserts..and excellent wine..The ambiance is relaxed yet sophisticated and transported me to paris. It's a great place to go on a date or with friends where you can hear yourselves talk. The service was excellent and the owners involvement give it a special appeal. It's a keeper. Need more places like this!

Very Disappointed
After reading great reviews about Cafe Joul's brunch I was looking forward to sharing this "hidden gem" with a friend and was very disappointed. Though the restaurant was quaint, the food was just okay. We ordered the Salmon Burger & Croque Monsieur which both cost an additional $2-3 on top of the $21 prix-fixed menu. For a $28 brunch I expected a much better meal than we had eaten. The "Sarabeth's Bread Basket" seemed stale and both meals weren't anything special. Overall I felt the meal was very overpriced and did not meet expectations. Maybe diners should just stick to the pancakes, as other reviewers have suggested.
