    good but not mind-numbing

we were looking for a nice tibetan restaurant with good food and chose this one off of the reviews. the food was surprisingly fresh and i'm pretty sure they make it right then and there. everything was delicious although the lamb was definitely lamb by taste (i.e. lamb). the portions were on the small side which was meh. the restaurant itself was not anything to write home about in terms of decoration, just a few tables and pictures on the wall, music playing, not a place to take your fiance's parents or anything but a good spot to chow down on some decent ethnic food. mango lassi was delicious.

    Great Value, Great Food

I either eat in or pick up (live about 5 minutes away) once a week and it is always very good and very inexpensive. Momo is awesome (not tried Chicken or Potato, only Vegetable and Beef), Chili Dofu (and further all the tofu dishes) are great, cabbage salad is outstanding. Very highly recommended, though of note that it's BYOB and cash only.

    Cheap and tastey

The avocado and potato salad was surprisingly delicious, but the chicken curry had whole pieces of cloves in it- so, not pleasent. The tofu chili was outstanding, as were the momo dumplings. Everything was seasoned really well, and there was pleanty of sesame oil used, which was really nice

Cheered up grumpy people on a gray day

T'was a gray winter day (after a gray winter day) and the two of us had been taking it out on each other since morning (maybe earlier). Then came a late lunch at Cafe Himalaya: nice, straightforward lentil soup unusual and satisfying avocado & potato salad beef momo (dumplings to you, just in case you've not gone ahead and read all the other reviews on this page) with superior slaw and hot sauce on the side lamb curry tasting like home cooking should taste (but never did in my house) accompanied by light and fluffy rice that was good enough to eat all by itself (albeit better with the curry) and a satisfying mango lassi to sip along with all the good food spread out on the table. The room was roomy, simple and pleasant. The service was efficient and attentive. The prices were reasonable enough that they would still have been reasonable if they were higher. So we left Cafe Himalaya in much finer fettle than when we'd entered: we were nicer to each other (still are) and nicer to ourselves as well (by which I mean that we proceeded directly across the street to Russ & Daughters and dropped twice as much money on the makings of a Sunday morning smoked-fish-and-bagels breakfast as we'd just spent on a Saturday afternoon Tibetan lunch). The short of it: Cafe Himalaya is a nice place serving extraordinary (by which I mean unsual, out of the ordinary) food at quite ordinary prices. We'll be back.

good things come to those who wait

this place was a pleasant surprise in the otherwise grungy neighborhood. everything is made to order and the eating area is small but it's calm, clean and delightful. the beef dumpling lunch special is truly delicious. for 4.99 plus tax you get a nice portion of dumplings with a light cabbage salad and delicious hot sauce on the side. this isn't a quick place... it took about half an hour for mine to be prepared for take out, but if you have some time to wait it's well worth it. people around me had ordered the noodle soups and the sauteed noodles and really everything looked delicious and fresh.
