    simple, classic fare. good aperitifs

This haunt appears to be everyone's neighborhood favorite. And with good cause shown. The food is classic: a comfort if you like post-colonial french food on the Riviera. Contrary to the prior review, the waitstaff did right by us, moving us from the genuinely uncomfortable bar stools (my lunch companion and I lack the leg length to sit comfortably at mile-high 1950s style diner stools) to a table, notwithstanding the steadily growing line of hopeful lunchoneers. And though the clientel are undeniably scenesterish, an appropriate list of aperitivi provided ample distraction. Now, if they would only add an anisette and water option!

    Rude service

Well, I love Cafe Gitane, but the other night I went with my wife and we were so turned off by the rudeness and attitude of the host. He was blatantly insulting and rude to my wife. I don't mind a wait, but I will not stand a man being rude to customers for no other reason than because he controls the door to a cafe. On our way out he told me our leftovers were thrown out and he offered no apology and just said it with utter indifference.

One of my favorite little places in NYC.

I stumbled upon this place by searching online, and then heard from many that it was a quality joint. I've gone there a gazillion times since then, and have always enjoyed everything I have eaten. I've never had problems getting a table (though I'm not here on weekends) and the service has been competant, if maybe a little Stepford-Wife-ish. However, the food is, across the board, delicious, fun, ethic comfort food, not to mention extraordinarily affordable. All the cheese plates are cheap and surprisingly filling. Try the The du Hammam. Try everything. Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

AMAZING.. if you can wait for hours

I really like this place, the food is amazing the BIG problem is that you have to wait for hours which you would actually consider if it wasn't for the slow service they have. The staff definitly don't know how to talk they ignore you and as it keep getting busy they just push you to the line of other people waiting like cows. ... but not everything is lost thanks god they have DELIVERY !!

    Worth the Wait

we went on a busy sunday afternoon and waited for 45 minutes but once we got in, the food was perfect and fresh. the hummus was creamy and perfect and the chicken was moist and warm. the crowd is a little hipster which can be annoying but the atmosphere is so cute that you basically don't notice after a few minutes. i would definitely recommend it to everyone.

One of the best finds of our NYC trip

After shopping at the nearly Bond No. 9 store, we asked the sales assistant for her recommendation of a restaurant in the area. Although she highly recommended a sushi place, my husband isn't fond of it, so we went the her other recommendation of Cafe Gitane and were very pleasantly surprised with the wonderful food. I loved the couscous with chicken and hummus, while my husband had the meatballs. Great service and loved that we had to share a table with two lovely young ladies who spoke a foreign language. Felt like a small world cafe which we thoroughly enjoyed.
