Very uneven food quality, cleanliness, and service. The greeting may be friendly or flatly indifferent; facilities may be clean on one visit, unkempt on the next; service may be helpful, but mostly it has been hurried, uninformed and surly. On one occasion, the waiter did not inform us that a dish was unavailable that evening until we asked, after 25 minutes, what was causing the delay. Worst, the food varies widely, not only from item to item but also from moment to moment. On our most recent visit, a first order of a dish was delicious, perfectly cooked and light, but a second order, placed only a few minutes later, was bland, overcooked and oily. The host merely shrugged and walked away. The impression given is that the staff--kitchen and dining room-- is just coasting until the end of the shift, or until they find other jobs.

I was recently here with family for a first time ever meal -- this, after rad reviews and personal testimonials from all my non-asian friends. What a huge disappointment. This place caters to a non-asian palate. So long as you do not expect authenticity, this place can pass for a decent 'chinese' eatery. But if you grew up eating traditional asian fare and/or sampled the homegrown stuff throughout Shanghai and the greater Asia, as I have -- you too, will be disappointed. Do not bring your 'elders' here... you will get an earful like I did.

This is one of the better places on the UES for classic Chinese the food is fresh and clean and there are many excellent dishes like the Egg Fu Yung, noodles (tried the cold sesame, lo mein and chow fun so far), crispy fried wonton and the roast pork buns. I would give the lesser rating of very good to the chow mein, crispy prawns with peppered corn salt and the wonton soup.

I can only comment on my muliple experiences, but i disagree with the earlier comment about the managemnet. I have been ordering delivery and dine-in at cafe evergreen for the last 4 years and i have recieved nothing but very good and well above average chinese food (excellent for the UES). But mainly the staff there have always been super helpful and very friendly! I personally believe the problem with the last reviewer was the reviewer. Food is great for UES chinese, and service and hospitality is superb!

Arrogant discourteous Manager....asked for no ginger...was served ginger...he refused to accept responsibility and was rude and insulting. He made a rude statement about ALL Americans trying to "get away with no paying bill"....we paid our check and walked out!

I worked in the neighborhood but had never been in here since last week. I have already gone back for another meal. This is the best Chinese on the UES.
