Great place for authentic food from Spain
Awesome restaurant. Food was great, very generous portions and reasonably priced. Fun and friendly staff. Service was very attentive. Look forward to returning again! We had been back many times ever since and it had replaced our former number one restaurant. What has made the place special was NOT only the food but the entire wait staff! waiter and with the two owners along with the rest of the staff made it a friendly, festive, party atmosphere and made you feel at home and part of a true "family". We have celebrated my and my wife's birthdays there for the last 2 years now going on three.

Great food and sevice
Love this place have been going for 4 years now. Everytime I go i know what to expect and i am never disappointed. Went for my birthday in Feb and they sang gave me a great treat it was fantastic. I love the broiled chicken and the pollo de cafe espanol is rich with flavor. My boyfriend's fav meal is the chicken in garlic sauce. Best appetizer is shrimp in garlic sauce. A nice portion of shrimp in that delicious sauce yum. And if they have garlic soup or clam chowder you will be in heaven.

Was that a joke? What a disappointment
The place smells like a fish market, Service is sloooow and poor (they didn't even bother warming the bread up - it was cold directly out of the refrigerator - did I mention we had to ask for it three times ?) Dishes were dirty Food was so so. We ordered two shrimp plates, one fish and a couple more appetizers. The only good thing was the Spanish Omelet; the rest, total disappointment. Don't go there. there are plenty of nice places around.

This is my "Happy Place"
We found Cafe Espanol quite by accident about 15 years ago. Spain is one of our favorite countries. We were strolling through the Village and happened upon this very Spanish looking restaurant. When we walked in and sat down we felt we were in Spain. We even recognized a place we had been, represented by a mural of Seville on the wall of the main dining room. We drive about 80 miles each way to go there and sometimes several times in one week. The food is excellent, the Sangria wonderful and the prices reasonable, even for New York. We have found the waiters, with few exceptions, to be more than happy to make your experience there a pleasurable one. We have brought most of our close friends there at one time or another. All have loved the place. Many of them have brought their friends and relatives and have had the same good experience. We have even spent a few New Years Eves in the Cafe. I can be in a foul mood before entering the restaurant and immediately, once inside, my frame of mind is turned around and I am happy again. Try it, you'll like it!

poor service + so-so food=my not coming back
Went to Café Espanol last night to have some tapas and wine. We arrived around 11 and were told the kitchen closed at midnight, but the bar was open till around 3am. No problem. After being rushed by the waiter, we finally ordered our food as well as a bottle of wine. The food came out and was nothing spectacular. Gambas ajillo (so-so) Tortilla Espanola (again, so-so) Stuffed Mushrooms (not bad). Then a little after midnight we were told the restaurant was closed. But wait, you said the KITCHEN closed at midnight, not the restaurant. We were basically kicked out shortly thereafter, even though we hadn't finished our wine and there were still people at the bar. The waiter said those people were the owner's friends and therefore could stay till 3am. NOT what he had told us prior to ordering. Not a place I'll be returning to especially given the fact that not only the waiter was rude, but the owner himself walked by our table and gave us a disgusted look. Real classy. I definitely won't be recommending this place to my friends.
