This mainstay of the Upper West Side is still as wonderful as the day it opened some 20 years ago. And the hundreds of regulars will attest to the friendliness of the waiters, hosts and hostesses which is directly related to the lovely owners. Tourists (and there are many), actors, older retired folks, lot of families (we've watched many kids grow up here) to name but a few of customers who have enjoyed this special neighborhood diner. Yes, the prices have gone up, as have all the prices in the neighborhood, but it doesn't keep anyone away! The reliable diner food, yummy desserts (the chocolate cake covered with mini chocolate chips is devine!) and the kindly waiters keep everyone coming back again and again!

So yes. These fabulous reviews were accurate but something has gone horribly wrong in 2014 at the Cafe 82! I dont know what..but something has caused the menu to slowly almost double on certain items and the quality to drop. They actually charge .50 cents for a slice of tomato on sanwhiches that already cost almost $9. Expect to pay $20 per person including tip AND just to have fries on the Side with that sandwich. They also changed their bakeries for their pies and cakes which are horrible now and only expect a sliver for that $6. My husband noticed that just two years ago our bill with tip would be $25 for both of us. Today $38. We can only afford to eat out once a week. Now consider this....we both have jobs that pay under 25k after taxes (lets face it...that is what corp financial sector is paying- u r delusional if you think Manhattan is paying good wages for jobs) and we have to afford the NYC rent first so we dont get to enjoy the services below too often. Now consider the demographics that go here to Cafe 82...A lot of elderly on fixed incomes and working class New Yorkers. Pretty much the yuppie trust funders and foreigners do not go here. They go to Cafe Lalos or one of the better quality cafes. Its a shame because this diner has been a constant affordable option in the neighborhood. They will lose most of their clients and they will not sustain itself if they continue to creep up prices. Not with Chipotle and Brgr next door.

ok. delivery was late, but i gotta say, the egg was scrambled softly, which impressed me. also - the soggy potatoes - i just refried it - and it was fine. so. there. food - not so bad. delivery - poor.

I love this place. My favorite diner in the neighborhood by far. The problem is there is always a wait for a table. In the winter, that means you are constantly getting blasted with ice cold winds each time the door opens. If you're at a table close to the door that means your food gets cold very quickly. It also means you will have 3-10 people hovering over your table waiting for you to finish eating. It's really unfortunate. The diner and staff are great but it takes away from the experience to know that you will ALWAYS have to wait. And it's no flu to see groups of people obviously waiting for your table.

Love this place... Go every week for great food and service. Delicious corned beef hash!

I've been going to Cafe 82 with my wife for the past 5 years and it's one of our favorite places to eat. The portions are huge and the food is just great. Also, Cafe 82 has some of the best restaurant service I've seen. Quick service, and the waiters are super friendly too!

We went the first day it opened 18+ years ago and are still going, now with our 10 year old twins. What first drew us was the friendly staff, the delicious food (check out the veggie lasagna) and the most unusual thing for ANY restaurant (even the pricey ones!) is how clean it is! It looks the same today as it did when it opened! There are hundreds of "regulars" who have gone there for years, which really gives a "small town" feel to this excellent and unique place! Cheers to the two owners for creating this home away from homes for Upper West Siders (and it's family friendly, too!)
