    Good carnivorous cheap eats!

I work in the area & sometimes enjoy food from here for lunch. I gotta ditto the review below that says remember you're in a FOOD COURT. I don't rate this place the way I would an actual bbq restaurant, I'm looking for a quick cheap bite for lunch or after work! And they do it up pretty well here. Their sandwiches are a carnivore's dream - overflowing with so much meat, you'll need a fork for after. I prefer their pulled meats to the bbq chicken. They serve the sauce on the side in little to-go containers & often they'll give you one of each sauce so you can check 'em all out. Mashed taters are pretty tasty (though I'm not a fan of the gravy, a bit cafeteria/institutional-ish). Ask for a paper plate (sometimes they have, sometimes they don't) because things can get messy. So yeah, it's food court food but considering all the offerings around, it's pretty good!

it's difficult to make a bad salad but...

The cobb salad at Jimmy's express was rather disappointing. The cheese lacked flavor, some of the veggies were mushy, the chicken and bacon were dry and stale, the "vinaigrette" was little more then foul tasting oil. I'm not a picky eater at all but for $10 this salad was a real bummer. The mac and cheese on the other hand was pretty good. Either way I doubt I'll be getting lunch from them again.

    subpar

New-ish on the scene at the lower level food court in GCT, Bro Jimmy's is subpar. Slow service, tepid, greasy food on three occasions, capped by a Southern salad today, consisting of mostly wilted greens, about 1/4 chopped onion (I like onion, but please!), and dry chicken. Oh, don't forget the watered down Ranch dressing.

So far, after 7 years, best bbq in nyc

I've been looking for bbq similar to what I was raised on in South Carolina & Philly, and Jimmy's is the closest I've been able to find in nyc. The greens are all that...I've been to so many so called southern restaurants where they do not know how to do greens...these are full leaves, cooked...not tough or stringy, and spicy, not boring or bland. Perfect every time I order them, and I always get them w/my ribs, so I can have a veggie. Just had the fries...delivered, and they were still hot, crisp, yum. The staff at this location (don't really know the others) are always nice & professional. Only area I am sometimes disappointed in is the consistency of the quality of the ribs: as they are sometimes too fatty and/or tough. The sauce rocks!

It is what it is, which isn't bad

OK, so for all of the negative reviews, let me tell you something: YOU ARE IN A FOOD COURT IN GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL ORDERING FROM A CHAIN RESTURAUNT! I don't know if you were expecting real home cooking, but you are eating at a chain resturaunt in a food court in the north. For what it is, the food is good. I had the mac and cheese, rib tips, and corn bread. Corn bread being my favorite. And on days where you need soul food, it does the job. Of course it's not Grandma's Sunday dinner, but you don't have 6 - 8 hours to wait for everything to be done from scratch. More then likely you have an hour during work or a little while for a train to come. Take it or leave it, but it's better then the other options down there or the other options in the immediate area.

Don't Expect a Truly Good Meal Here

I'm from the Deep South and am there rather frequently. I know good barbecue and good southern food when I taste it. Trust me, this isn't it. I've been here several times, thinking I should just try something different the next time and now I'm ready to give up. This place wouldn't cut it in any southern city. The burnt tips are the best item on the menu and they're just OK. The chicken and ribs are bland. I LOVE fried pickles, but theirs have a crumby breading that's too heavy. As another reviewer mentioned, the collards are too salty. Add to that the fact that the hostess seemed upset at my last visit when I said I'd rather wait for a table rather than sit at the bar. The serivice for all of my vists was friendly and efficient, but you go to restaurants for the food. Three strikes with me and they're out.

    Not recommended

I went to Brother Jimmys craving good southern food and based on great reviews from other customers. The collard greens were inedible. The greens were so salty that the flavor was completely masked by salt. The grilled chicken sandwich was not seasoned at all, relying on the barbecue sauce to give it flavor. I did not want the barbecue sauce and was left with flavorless chicken. Also, it was so dry and chewy that it was like eating cardboard. I didn't expect authentic southern food but I at least expected a reasonably edible meal.
