Broadway Joe's Steakhouse
Posted by Canadian Girl on 08/09/2008
I ate here with my teenage daughter on our 1st trip to NYC. The steak was so so and only came with a side of bland rice....no veggies, just meat & starch. The Ceasar salad (additional price) was not good, but worst yet was the waiter who stood behind us through out the entire meal. He creeped my daughter out because he would answer any questions she'd ask me about the menu. He just hovered over us the entire time we were there. We won't be eating there again.

I've lived in New York City for 22 years and been to every steakhouse ten times. I've walked past Broadway Joe's on many occasions but never eaten there because it looked like a tourist trap. Then I won a raffle and got some coupons for a meal there and decided it was time to give it a try. Folks, trust me: All the bad reviews you've read here and elsewhere about Broadway Joe's are absolutely true. It's apparent the owners could care less about the quality of the food or service because all their customers are one-timers from out of town who just happen to be in the Theater District looking for dinner before their show. I can tell you from years of dining experience in New York, there are dozens of steakhouses in Manhattan that are far, far better than Broadway Joe's for about the same price. Of all my dining experiences since moving to New York I would put Broadway Joe's at or near the bottom. Truly a waste of time and money!! My wife and I ordered the porterhouse for two, medium rare, at $76.00 and it was nearly inedible! A quarter of the steak was grizzle and it was tough and tasteless. Even loading it up with salt and pepper didn't make it palatable. The sides were boring and expensive and the $16 jumbo shrimp wasn't very jumbo and certainly not fresh! The indifferent service was almost as bad as the food and the ambiance (if you can call it that) is unimaginative and not conducive to anything approaching fun or interesting. I have to admit the bar drinks weren't bad but for $13 a pop that's what I'd expect. So save you money and eat at Sizzler four or five times for what it would cost to eat one meal at Broadway Joe's. I promise it'll be better at Sizzler and you'll be a lot happier.

We ate at this restaurant as part of a dinner/theatre package which entailed us using 'Vouchers'. Even though a number of New York City restaurants participate in these packages one cannot help but get the impression that you're second class citizens. It would appear, in this location, that the 'Voucher' crowd is lumped into a back room, entered via the kitchen! They have an individual whirling around, formally dressed, who likes to keep things moving eg removing plates from the table prior to you indicating that you're done! Some restaurants provide beepers while you are awaiting your table this place stops just short of issuing you a stop watch with a pre - determined time frame. The restaurant is akin to service in reverse i.e. you should somehow feel priviliged to eat there! This is an old place with a woeful floor plan. It is the years gone by neighborhood joint that moved uptown intact. We had the 'sliver' of cheesecake for dessert only to be asked if we'd like some more because the first serving was so small. I will say that we had a superior 'busboy'. There is absolutely nothing to recommend this establishment. Maybe, in it's day, this place had it's moment that moment has long passed.

When I want an inexpensive meal and I am on the road I often will stop in a Sizzler for a $10 meal. The nerve of this place to call itself a steakhouse just blows me away. I had the Ceasar Salad, it was from a refrigerator and had no taste. My "Prime Rib" was half fat and was so thin it was probably cut on a slicing machine. Just a poor experience for a lot of money.

I am a frequent vistor to resatuarant row and was reluctant to try broadway joe but i wanted to see how it was after the renovation. But honestly me and my guest was surprised. I had the stuffed avacod which was good with crab meat and a shared a porterhouse for two. Very surprised and itwas a pleasent experience. Will comeback again Nice winelist too.

Stopped in on the later side of the evening, restaurant was empty but didn't think twice because we were catching a late dinner. Food was not great and not cooked to our specifications. Staff was unattentive and very mixed up in their own "hanging" out together at the bar area. wine was mediocre but only selection available by the glass. overall very disappointed and now we know why it was empty.
