    What a great night

Last night we had a table of 8 at Brasserie 8 1/2. The restaurant is beautiful, comfortable and quiet for a New York City venue. Our dinner(the prixe fixe) restaurant menu was delicious and generous. However the best contributor to our wonderful dinner was our waiter. Helpful, smart, cheerful and funny, he greatly contributed to our good time. We will be back and but we must sit at his table.

    What a chic Denny's!

If you are looking for a substandard buffet brunch experience in a tony, midtown setting, be ready to be spoiled. You'll leave thinking "WTF" as you are confronted with Costco pastries and a harried crew of clueless waitstaff. If you like train wrecks, this is a must see!

    Poor place for an event

Our wedding brunch was held at Brasserie 8 1/2. The food was not bad but I cannot recommend this restaurant for other wedding parties. We reserved a back room from 11-3, since we wanted our guests to have the opportunity to eat when it would be convenient for them, and the restaurant never voiced any objections to this arrangement when we booked it. Most of the guests came early, and the restaurant was fine with the early guests. But the restaurant was extremely rude to the guests who arrived at 1:30, since they apparently wanted to shut down our brunch room. They tried to prevent the guests from sitting at our table, and when I insisted that we had rented the room until 3, they continued to insist that no additional guests were allowed. I kept insisting that we had rented the room until three, and then they told me that they didn't have any way of keeping track of the number of guests and they didn't know who would pay for the late guests. I told them that their inability to keep track of guests wasn't my responsibility, and that I would be happy to pay for the extra guests. They spent several minutes making my guests and I feel quite unwelcome, and it was a very uncomfortable situation before they finally let the guests sit. Later, when my guests went to the buffet in between courses the waiters cleared away their silverware immediately as a not-very-subtle hint that they wanted us to leave quickly, so they had to exit the wedding brunch and steal silverware from tables in the main dining room, which was set up for brunch for individual guests. At some point they must have realized that I was the bride, and they apologized profusely and offered my guests champagne, and offered to waive the costs of the guests. I was surprised when the credit card we had left as a deposit was charged for the late guests, and when we asked the manager about the charge, we were told that he was sorry but it was too late to refund the charges (which seemed very strange since it was the same month we had been billed) and offered to let us come to his restaurant for free. Since the restaurant had upset me on the day after my wedding, I have no desire to return, and wanted other brides to be warned about this restaurant before booking events. It's a shame since the food is so good, and it could easily have been a lovely event.

    Skip the brunch

What an expensive and disappointing brunch. The prix fixe menu includes a limited buffet. You can order French toast at no extra cost, but you'll receive one meager slice. All beverages including tea and coffee are extra. The only plus is that you can sit and talk without being disturbed. With all the lovely brunch options available in NYC, definitely take this one off your list.

    Outstanding dinner

Our memorable meal contained a hidden jewel in each course: For starters, we shared a shellfish platter which had, of course, oysters, crab meat, mussels, clams, shrimp and lobster but the chef made the ceviche from scallops, unusual to say the least. The mélange of sauces gave it a sweet taste that was, simultaneously, tart. Yummy! Guacamole came next and was unlike all others: meyer lemon and a medley of vegetables with wonderfully pungent flavors. The last appetizer was the best: tuna tartare with fresh wasabi grated over it. Once you’ve had fresh wasabi, it’s impossible to go back to the pasty stuff that they serve in most Japanese restaurants. The main course was the superbly cooked Dorado, its juicy flesh encased in its crusty skin. Accompanied by crunchy French fries, this course was the masterpiece. We both licked the platter clean. Somehow, we found room for the black and white dessert which had four different varieties of chocolate. And yet was smooth and creamy. Our server, described every course perfectly. It showed that he enjoyed his job. the sous-chef in charge while the chef had the night off, earned his stripes. A wonderfully talented man who will, I am sure, be making waves in the near future. From the beginning to the end, the meal was well-presented, outstanding and unforgettable, the setting, surrounded by original Matisses, exceptional and the ambiance warm and welcoming. Hats off!

    Wonderful dining

I went here with my husband for an anniversary dinner, and we both enjoyed the food, ambiance and service. Our waiter took special care of our dietary needs, and every course was very delicious. Will definitely dine again!

    What a disappointment...

Went there yesterday for lunch--Restaurant Week. Had Heirloom Tomatoes for appetizer, Lobster Salad for entree, Orange Something-or-Other for dessert. The "chef" certainly has no idea what goes with what or how to prepare anything. His/her idea of good food is to throw in a load of sugar, make everything an aspic consistency and serve tiny portions. Also, the service was sub-par. I had to ask (beg) many times for a coffee refill. No-one ever came by to ask if we needed anything during our meal. I will say, however, that all the people working there are EXTREMELY nice.
