Disappointing on many levels!!
My husband is an ex South African & we really wanted to like Braai & were realistic with our expectations, this is NY not SA. Braai disappointed on many levels, chiefly taste & authenticity! The Samossa's were soggy & the filling pasty. The Boerewors was skinny & very overcooked - where was the plump, thick, juicy wors found all over SA? The Briyani' was all rice with very little protein to be found. The Pap (Polenta) wasnt bad, but its friend the "tomato gravy" was a poor imposter, at best. The slap chips were an insult to the original version. The Peri-Peri Chicken Livers were good and so were the Ribs, however Ribs could have come from anywhere in the world (that wasnt the tangy Monkey Gland sauce found all over SA). All in all a poor reflection on what is otherwise a very colorful and delectable cuisine. Very disappointing.

Nice Place Under Deliver
The nice decor of the place gives you the feeling of being in South Africa. However, upon being seated we had to wait a while before we were given a menu. Apart from the presence of 4 staff at the medium size restaurant, it seem no one else, except for our waiter was able to do much of anything else. Our waiter, Angel, told us his name at least 3 times during our approximately45 minutes lunch. The hostess, who got us seated, was at first seemed reluctant to help Angel who was a bit overwhelmed in attending to the five or six tables were filled at the time. The runner is not much of a help to us as customer nor to the rest of the staff at the establishment. I first, asked him for a drink menu, he just pointed t Angel and grunted something unintelligible. So, we then asked the hostess to bring us the drink menu. When my food came, it comes with a series of condiment. So, I asked the runner who brought them, what the different condiments are. Again, he grunted something unintelligible and pointed at our waiter Angel. The food, was alright. Nothing spectacular and forgettable. I doubt that it is a good representation of South African food. The South African wines that we had was great. Slightly earthy with a clean finish. The dessert is also forgettable. It is unfortunate, when a place that sounds and look promisingly good just doesn't deliver.

Amazing Atmosphere
Awesome atmosphere. Very unique. Great food, but small portions of it. Service was pretty good.

Not the South Africa I want to think of in NYC
As a proud South African, I felt compelled to write this review. I was super excited about this restaurant and felt that it would be a great place to go to after a Broadway show. The ambiance is really cool and did make me feel a little homesick (in this case a good thing). We were one of two tables in the restaurant (the other being occupied by the owner/manager and some friends/or business associates – ont sure which). The food was mediocre AT BEST and WAY overpriced. As for the wine, the mark up is a bit of a joke and the wine menu is very deceiving as it lists the price for ½ bottles of wine for ALL wines. I actually ordered a bottle of wine which I thought was $35, but ended up being $70. This means that the cheapest bottle of wine is actually $50 which strikes me as odd. The service was fine at the beginning of the night but became more and more useless and by the end I was so annoyed that all I wanted to do was leave. If you are a South African or from Southern Africa you will be disappointed when you go here. If you have never been to South Africa, please do not let this restaurant shape your image.

great experience all around!
I have never reviewed a restaurant however I felt my boyfriend and I had such a great experience at BRAAI that we should give them credit where it's deserved. The atmosphere is really cute and cozy. The place in general was really nicely decorated. Also, our waiter was amazing, I feel horrible because I don't remember his name but he was so helpful and extremely accomodating. He recommended great wines and answered all of our questions. We got a 1/2 bottle of recommended wine and it was very good. We started off with the soup and also the mushroom appetizer, both great. You could tell everything was made right then and there from scratch. For the entrees my boyfriend got the seafood biryani entree (a special that night) and I got the prawns. Both were to die for. My only complaint was that the prawns were a little messy to eat (they were cooked with the shell). Our dessert was malva pudding and it was one of the best desserts I've ever had. the Value was great...1/2 botle of wine, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 1 dessert came out to $115 which in my opinion is a great deal. Restaurant comes highly recommended!
