    Beautiful But Mean

This restaurant has a warm and elegant atmosphere that can't be beat. You know it's contrived but it still manages to feel genuine. And out of a party of eight, every one of our dishes was delicious. But I won't go back. It was a Monday at 6:30, not a busy night. The bartender, with four people seated at the bar, took ten minutes to take our drink order and just as long to prepare them. While the waitress was kind enough, the front end hostesses, clearly recently transplanted from some other state, were surly and rude, both on our arrival and departure. At first I thought it was just our older (in our 30's and 40's) group...maybe it was the fur coats?...the expensive boots? but they were just plain unfriendly and condscending to everyone who came in. Rolling their eyes at a woman from another party who stumbled slightly. Shutting the door on a customer leaving. Yikes! The appetizers took FORTY minutes from the time we ordered. Another FORTY from when the plates were cleared until entrees. The restaurant has the opportunity to be beautiful and welcoming- let's hope the owners learn to appreciate not just good food (in a town with plenty) and lovely atmosphere (ditto) but fine service as well. You need all three to succeed.

Is it about the food or the scene?

Food at Bobo is polished enough for the west village. I would like to see more attention put into the service though. But this place does not seem about the food or service to me. It seems to be about the scene, which seems to fit well into the new 'ideal' of the west village, be that good or bad. Bobo has the hip atmosphere that you'd expect from a recreated 'European banquet.' It's warm, it's got energy. Strangely though, as one poster pointed out - everyone here is very tall. I can't understand why, but everyone who I've seen walking out is at least 6 foot plus. Not many wrinkles to be found either. A painfully hip crowd. Of course, judging by the line of black towncars that usually (and somewhat pretentiously) line the street in front, that hipness may have been paid for by handsome hedge fund profits or L'Oreal contracts. I plan to go back, hopefully when less busy, so I can truly try the food, and not get distracted by the other seven-figured patrons.

mediocre food and i left hungry

I was excited to try Bobo and sorry that I did. The space is swanky. Great job on the decor. Comfortable, stylish, easy, but cool. The service was actually quite good. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and about the wines they served. That's where the good part ends. Servers brought out an amuse bouche of soup and the soup was cold. I was with a group and well all had cold soup. The appetizer salad was fine, but at gourmet prices, it was not better than what you'd scoop out at your local salad bar. My main dish, a branzino, was a very small portion and was not very good. It tasted fishy. It was lukewarm. It was completely unsatisfying. The other person in our group who ordered it took three bites and left the rest. I arrived home hungry and unsatisfied. When I pay the price to eat at a nice restaurant, and I don't mind paying the price if the food is good, I expect more than the mediocre I got. I won't be back any time soon.

Not recommended if you're over 40

Went to Bobo last night for a birthday celebration. Food was quite good (although portions were small) but service was totally lacking. Where did they get these waiters? No one knew what they were doing. It didn't help that we were kept waiting for our table (although once we got it, it was in a lovely location). Steak tartare, elbow pasta, gnocchi were all wonderful. Be careful with the bouilabaisse, taste was wonderful, but if you blinked, you missed it. And where was the rouille? Crowd must have consisted of alot of models, everyone there was very tall. If your in your 30's and think your hip, you'll probably like it, but for anyone over 40, spend a little more money and go to a quaint french restaurant on the upper east side .

    Amazing

Love, love, love this restaurant! Food was spectacular (elbow pasta- do not miss it, trust me!), service was great, and wow, what a venue...the decor is magnificent. The garden is unlike any in the city...exactly what this neighborhood needs. Do not miss Bobo!

    A Little disappointed

I went here on a Saturday night and while I will say the atmosphere was fantastic the food and service lacked. We had to wait for everything. We were seated about 30mins late. Our entrees came out when we still had our appetizers, we asked the waiter for another sidedish that never came, the salt we asked for came at the end of our meal, our drinks were not refilled, and when we did ask for a glass of wine it took a while. The ice cream on our desserts came out melted and the coffee was lukewarm. I will say the Homemade Almond Papardelle was amazing but everything else was pretty average. I will try going back in a few months since it is a new restaurant.
