Bobby Van's Steakhouse located in New York's landmark Helmsley Building is providing its fare in serious surroundings. Upon entering, one is greeted with the sight of a credenza groaning under the weight of large bottles of wine. A bar full of regular customers is on the left and looking into the one-hundred seat dining room, one sees the thirty-foot high ceiling and windows that overlook Park Avenue. Bobby Van's was named Gourmet Magazine's Favorite Steakhouse in Manhattan. We are also the recipient of the 2006 DiRoNA award as well as being one of the restaurants recommended by the 2006 Michelin Guide.

    Average food, poor service

The only attention we received was from the friendly hostess. We were shown to a table and then ignored . We had just decided to leave when a waiter came with menus. Another long wait to have our order taken by a different waiter who seemed extremely put out by our presence. Most arrogant service we have ever experienced.

    good food bad service

I was in the city on buisness,as I was finished around lunch time I decided to treat myself to a good steak. I went to Bobby Van's. I was seated and when the server came he gave me my menu and walked away. I was not impressed. When he returned he asked me what I wanted to order. Took my order and left until my steak arrived. While I was waiting for my meal I noticed that other customers ordering after me were given a list of specials and a discription of each special. Again I was not impressed. My steak was cooked medium well like I orderd, the side dish (creamed spinach) was ok. I enjoyed the steak very much but because of the disinterested attitude of the server I will not be returning to Bobby Vans. Luckily New York City has many fine Steakhouses to choose from.

The most disappointing porterhouse steak I have ever had

over $100 for the steak ($47x2) and it had no flavor. Typically a good steakhouse brings it out sizzling on the hot plate. This steak sucked and was tough too eat. Although a good piece of meat, they just cooked it completly wrong.

Sad to say not a great time!

After being recommended by the concierge at the Waldorf we were looking forward to a great NYC steak! When we arrived we were told that we didn't have a reservation even though we heard it being made and confirmed, not a big deal in itself except the lady greeter seemed perplexed and uninterested in being helpful. Weird given that the restaurant was three quarters empty on a Saturday night! Eventually she consented to find us a small out of the way table! ( thanks so much!) food was passable great baked clams and tomato salad, sadly the main event, a porterhouse for two ordered rare to medium arrived in a pool of melted butter and cremated on one side! Again this might please some people but you are always going to over cook the Filet side. As a rule some colour is acceptable on rare steak but carbonisation never is, just lazy cooking! Waiters were helpful and attentive but sadly they've got an uphill struggle if front and back off house aren't doing their jobs! All in all not a great experience especially considering a $350 bill! I'm sure they can do better but it didn't happen for us!

Brilliant steak and delicious everything else

We were greeted and seated promptly for our dinner reservation. We started our meal off with baked clams, crabmeat cocktail that comes with an incredible cream sauce (mayo, mustard combo?) and cocktail sauce for dipping, and the harry salad, refreshing with colorful tomatos, greenbeans, shrimp, bacon and a shallot vinigrette. Then came the porterhouse for two. This was cooked to perfection - medium rare, served slightly charred. The steak was incredibly flavorful, one of the best, if not the best in all of NYC (and bklyn!). We ordered hashbrowns, spinach however it was the sauteed mushrooms that stood out as far as the sides go. Over the years have had consistantly solid meals here - service is always great, professional and accomodating. Expensive overall but would recommend to anyone looking for an amazing steak or veal chop. worth it!

The Vault is Awful - wher do I begin

Ok as with most reviewers I like, i'm going to begin by telling you where I have eaten steak, so I dont get called a "tourist", or a "penny pincher". So I have been to Lugers, BLT, Wolfgangs, Keanes, Sparks, Del Friscos, STK, Delmonicos, Mortons, Shulas, Craftsteak, Old Homestead, Prime, BOA.So I think I know my steak. Here is my review Atmostphere - well you are in a dark old bank vault with no windows and the lighting just isnt great, they need to sort it out as you feel like you are in a coal mine Food Quality - Filet Mignon - Medium rare - When it arrived the The steak smelled off, and had the texture of the bottom of an old shoe, there were so few fries they all had their own space on the plate, it was immediately sent back Service - Our waiter didnt even welcome us as we were given menus, just ashen faced not inviting at all. Value - Probably the worst steak expereince I have had in my life, I'm never going back.

    Best restaurant of restaurant week

Last week I had the pleasure of eating at some of the best restaurants in NYC being a restauranteur myself I have a greater expectations of how I would like to be treated. On thursday and on friday we were at Bobby Van's on Wall street never been there before so it was quite an experience eating inside a bank vault. The menu offered for restaurant week had very good choices. Naturally we ordered steaks which were a nice size, thick and perfectly cooked the waiter did not look down at us for ordering from the restaurant week menu and we did get that look in a few of the other places we dined and in some we had to beg for the menu. The best thing was that they had a half off on the wine deal so that worked in our favour also. My waiter eventhough it was quite busy was very attentive and surprisingly had a good wine knowledge he was able to recommend a great wine very reasonably priced. Service was exellent and he took the time to tell us a little about the history of the bank vault and Bobby Van's. I greatly reccomend this restaurant to anybody, especially somebody who loves steaks you have great choices and the other places do not even compare.
