...and then we finally get it and it's not so great. I'm talking here about barbecue, a food prevalent in the South but harder to find in NYC. So we make amends if it's not fabulous. I'm no BBQ connoisseur, even though I grew up in the South and ate my fair share. (You haven’t lived until you’ve tried an all-you-can-eat BBQ barn.) But even as an amateur, I can say Blue Smoke isn’t great BBQ. I dined once for dinner, and had incredibly flavorful short ribs (their Wed night special) that had been beer marinated (or so they tasted) alongside equally tasty bacon-infused collard greens. So far, so good. And things really didn’t go downhill when I returned for lunch recently. The Caesar salad was passable. The devilled eggs were bland and pricey ($6.99 for four halves? Come on!). For an entrée I had the Rhapsody in ‘Cue, which consisted of four ribs, skin-on chicken, a standard sausage link, a relatively bland pile of pulled pork, and a bizarre pickle pile. The ribs were meaty and flavorful. None of the meats were drenched in sauce, which might explain some of the blandness. But I wouldn’t write home about or bring my Southern friends to try any of it. It’s all merely passable, and New Yorkers should demand better. Service-wise, our waiter did the best he could, even when our entrees took a while to arrive. Blue Smoke gets very crowded, and thus noisy, so don’t bring a first date or your hard-of-hearing grandmother there. If you crave BBQ or ribs, give it a shot. I can heartily recommend a Wed night visit for the short ribs. A nice touch for kids: Blue Smoke provides pig-shaped cookies to decorate, whereafter they bake them and bring the finished product for dessert . But pack the plastic – our lunch for two (with tip) came to $88.

I was anticipating really great BBQ. I ordered the Baby Back Ribs and found them to be quite tough and tasteless, my friend ordered the Texas Beef Ribs which he said were dry. The appetizers we ordered for the table were great, hush puppies, potatoe chips and the wings. The mashed potatoes were a hit and the mac & cheese was much too slaty for me. What bothered me mostly was that I had to pay for the cornbread and 2 glasses of wine cost $10. Different beer choices were a plus. I'm a southern girl and to me this was not anywhere near southern style (South Carolina) BBQ - I guess it's done different in Texas and St. Louis. But I am willing to go back and try something else. The service was excellent and we didn't feel rushed to leave the premises.

I don't even like pork and I ordered a pulled pork it was I think one of the best things I have ever tasted it was amazing! I will forsure go back and bring my friends!

This is absolutely the best BBQ this Texas boy has had in quite a while. It tastes like the stuff I used to get in the Valley when I was growing up. They cook the brisket perfectly but what sets them apart is that they use a very fine cut of organic meat, incredibly flavorable meat. Expensive? This is NYC. I would rather pay a few bucks more and get something really delicious.

Of course the ribs and pulled pork are outstanding, but you must order the Warm Barbecued Potato Chips, the Macaroni & Cheese, and the Dessert Sampler. One heck of a culinary delight!

We love the food at blue smoke. Have been there many times and have never been disappointed. Everything from the ribs to the brisket to the desert is delish. Even the hot chocolate with the marshmallow toasted right on top of the cup is absolute perfection. But do be prepared to wait and to pay!

First, comments on the last couple of reviews: garnish? You want garnish? If you go to a real BBQ joint (I've been to a bunch in KC) they throw the ribs in some butcher paper, on top of some Wonder bread, toss some pickles on top and tape the whole thing up. Thats BBQ. What do you need garnish for?!? As for Blue Smoke being overpriced... for a slab of ribs, it seems comparable to me. You're in NY baby. Even bad rib places here will price a rack at $20+. So while I dont want to call it "overpriced" (unless you label every restaurant in NYC overpriced, in which case everyone will think you're a country bumpkin)... I'll only give it a 3.5 for value... you COULD satisfy your hunger for 1/10th the price. By getting a couple of dirty water hot dogs. Anyway... the KC ribs are always, always good here. Big, meaty and flavored just right. Add a bit of the sweet and spicy sauce from the table, and its just... really gooood. My wife loves the pulled pork. Our kid loves the kids menu, esp the decorate yourself cookie. I even like the fries. And the mac and cheese too. The burger is OK, but you can do better. But come here for the ribs, and you wont be disappointed. Oh, and the service is usually friendly but hurried, because the place is always packed, even at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. Yes, you do have to flag down your waiter/waitress if you want a refill on you coke. And twice they took away my wife's place while *I* was still working on it (she couldn't finish). But it was an honest mistake and I dont blame them. Just protect the food you are eating off your dinner partner's plate! 8-) Highly Recommended.
