Disappointing
This place needs a renovation because it looks like a mess (peeling paint, chairs falling apart, etc.). The food is decent, but not worth a trip to the East Village. According to the awards hung on the wall, the accolades seem to have stopped in 2007, which isn't surprising given the recent visit.

Great Burgers, but get them to go
Their signature Blue 9 Burger, a double cheese with lettuce and tomato, is very good. Similar to Shake Shack's burger, in my estimation. The fries are thin and crisp but WAY over salted. Ask for them with no salt, and salt them yourself. The restaurant itself is an uncomfortable dump, and not a dump with character, like an 11th Avenue dive bar, just cheap, tacky and uncomfortable: Hard, wooden benches and seats, a much-too-loud TV always on, and not nearly enough heat. And the service kind of rots too. The same person who takes orders in the restaurant is also on the phone with delivery customers. It may take a few minutes before you can even place you order. Anyway, the burger is top-notch, so get it delivered.

disappointing
First time was ok, but second and last time, only one person woking.. taking orders at the register while cooking my food. As a result, the burger was burnt. sorry, no more.

Disappointing
Ordering a burger from a fast food joint would have been better. This was sloppy, old, cold and just gross.

Really Good Burgers
After my favorite neighborhood burger place closed (The Burger Joint on 20th and 3rd) I have been looking for something to replace it and Blue 9 definitely has. I had tried it a few years ago after it first opened and never returned but I wish I did sooner. Yeah, the decor is dilapidated but it's not really a place one goes to eat there and linger. The Blue 9 burger is fantastic. In theory a double cheeseburger with sauce should be a sloppy mess but the few times I've had it the patties never slipped off the bun and the sauce did not drip everywhere. The fries are okay for what they are but Blue 9 is definitely a place you go to for the burgers.

Much better when it opened
Back when I lived in a NYU dorm (4 years ago), Blue 9 was the place to go for great fresh burgers with friends. However, my recent visit was not very pleasant. The burger itself was overcooked and burnt and the fries are a soggy mess. The atmosphere is terrible- paint is peeling, seating is falling apart and the lighting is not good. What happened to this place? If you want a good burger go to shack shake on 23rd. Much better food.
