Good food, not so good service

Live in the neighborhood & have been here many times, always with friends from out of town. Like the food, although would like to see more specials, like the coziness. However, there seems to be a tremendous turnover in help. Will try it once again, but if the service doesn't improve, it may be my last. Always feel that turnover in help reflects on bad management.

    Bon Appetite!

Gave Bistro Vendome a try and had a most enjoyable meal. The onion soup was served well baked; the broth dark and rich with flavor. The escargot came out in their cassoulet dish bubbling hot with a great garlic butter taste and a suggestion of parsley...which is my preference. My rack of lamb chops were thick with not a hint of fat with a nice rich side of a lightly crispy potato gratin. My dining companion's mixed greens salad was bountiful followed by the mussels provencale which were also a garlic butter delight along with the side of hot and crisp fries. Dessert of chocolate fondant and raspberry gratin were a sweet way to end the meal though perhaps there could have been a wee bit more raspberry in the gratin. The martini's were a generous to the top of the glass pour; the wine a nice pour as well. Noticed the dishes being enjoyed around us and all looked good. The crispy goat cheese cake appetizer looked swell, the special lamb shank would have been a go to 'cept for the fact that I was set on rack of lamb. The upstairs seating is most pleasant (and in the nice weather the outdoor area looks like it would be a treat). Bellying up to the bar to dine would work. There appears to be a large room on the lower level that looks like a great area if you're a really large party or private party. Definitely will be back...want to try one of their steak dishes and sauces.

    One time trip

I have been here twice actually and while the soft shell crab was excellent I found that the second time around it was mediocre. Maybe it was a change in staff or kitchen staff was being switched but honestly not as good the second time around...

Second time for Soft Shelled Crabs

For the second time I tried this restaurant with a friend. I ordered the same thing that I did last July: my favorite, soft shelled crabs. Giving the restaurant the benefit of doubt it was the second chance to win my approval. Alas, again the crabs came with a red "Provencal" sauce under them. Ruins the lovely delicacy of the sautéed crabs. Interestingly the same sauce was on the plate of my friend's roasted chicken. Not a good sign for a first class restaurant as this one flamed to be. I will not go there again. Unfortunate because it is near my apartment.

    Disappontment

When we, a party of 4 entered, the maitre d' turned his back abruptly and said he was busy. We were with guests first visit to the U.S. finally he turned and said"oh you can sit here". The fish we ordered was cold and soggy, the veggies swimming in soggy onions. Only the desserts were delicious. For a classy neighborhood bistro, the experience was totally classless.

    Amazing

Amazing from the second i walked in the door! we were a group of 4 and we ordered like there was no tomorrow. Everything from the Oysters, Escargot, through to the Duck Confit and Steak au Poivre was exceptional. One of the best meals that i have experieinced in a long time!

Older crowd that all knows each other

Maybe it was an off night, but we felt kind of uncomfortable there. We got a strange look from the maître d’ when we said we didn't have reservations. The crowd seemed cliquish as well. Everyone who walked in seemed to know the manager. He was perfectly gracious to us, but it still felt uncomfortable like we didn't fit in--perhaps that was because we were several decades younger than most of the other guests. The crowd was really much older (the well-off UES type in their 50's and 60's). Once we were seated though, the service was very good (despite having our waitress switched out for a waiter halfway through...) and the food was great. I would recommend this place with the caveats above.
