Authentic Italian restaurant
I have dined here several times with groups and we have always enjoyed the experience. The grilled calamari over salad greens was just right. Perhaps the reviewer who was disappointed was expecting something like fried calamari in red sauce. Thankfully, this is not that kind of restaurant. The focus here is on careful preparation of fresh ingredients and an attractive presentation rather than on quantity. Even so, we did not walk away hungry, just not stuffed. The thin crust pizzas are a strong point here. The chicken bracciola was good as well. For dessert, we had roasted fruit with a flamed Grand Marnier sauce which also merits recommendation. The staff is attentive enough if not extremely friendly. We will continue to return to Bettola.

Below expectations
Given the fact that they had a decent review I was surprised to find that none of us thought the food was that good. I had the asparagus which was over cooked and smothered in cheese and sauce so that you couldn't even enjoy the taste and my salmon was extremely greasy. My girlfriend had the calamari which we thought was a plate of calamari however it was a nice salad with just a very few small pieces of grilled calamari on it. She also ordered the steak which should be taken off the menu as it was tough and thin and just not good. The staff were nice and service was ok although we had to grab the waitress on the run a few times. I will skip this one in the future since in NY there are so many other's to choose from.

not worth the price
i went here expecting a nice italian meal. what i got was stale bread, warm soup (that was suppossed to be chilled), overpriced gnocci that tasted like the sauce was from spaghetti o's and overall just a really unpleasant suprised. i would say that the meal would be passable if the total was $15, not $55. I would say "stay away", find someplace more authentic and/or more reasonablly pricedl

Best pizza in NYC
I really do think this is the best, most authentic pizza, of any Italian restaurant in New York. The staff are very friendly, and the pastas and salads are almost even better than the pizza. The only bad thing is that I have a tough time deciding what to order when I go!

confused
I can't believe that this is the same place reviewed below and am shocked by the zagat review. The outside patio was comfortable and the staff friendly, but that is where it ends. The food was subpar. Every seafood dish was over cooked and dried out. The rest of the dishes we ordered were poor as well. Unfortunately, there is no reason to return.
