make it at home for less!

My husband and I try a new restaurant in the neighborhood at least once a month. We like to support our "local" businesses, and figure we should try something outside of our regular spots to spread the wealth around. We decided to try Bella Luna because of it's friendly atmosphere and outside seating. The restaurant itself is lovely and clean, and the staff are courteous and accommodating. The food, unfortunately, is nothing to write home about. In fact, you could probably make their simple dishes at home for half the price and twice the flavor. We tried the polenta as an appetizer it was so salty we had to return it. We also had the Insalata di Sicilia, which was actually good: the dressing was light, tasty and there was a generous portion of shredded parm. The pasta was fine, but wasn't anything we couldn't have made at home. During these times when New Yorkers are watching every entertainment penny we spend, it's imperative that restaurants step up to the plate and offer more than excellent service for your hard earned dollar.

Nice place but a bit bland

Service was the best part of our experience- our waiter was very nice and we never found ourselves needing anything or having to fight for attention. The atmosphere was great as well, and the value was fair- cheaper than many similar Italian restaurants in the neighborhood. The food that we got was good but a bit too bland- we both found ourselves putting a lot of pepper on our food. Otherwise, a very nice experience.

    Bellisima Bella Luna

We go here for special occasions-food is great! but I still have to figure out why when we eat there its soo good and if you take home left overs from lunch and try to have them for dinner ( a few hours later) the cheeses always taste stale.

Nice little joint with an good menu

Found this place on Menupages and decided to give it a try. i had a pretty simple meal but everything was tasty. Spit pea soup was flavorful but not too "pea" tasting, not too salty or bland. I then had the Rigatoni with fried eggplant, sundried tomatoes and mozzarella in a tomato based sauce. It was very flavorful, paste was cooked just right and one of the better pasta dishes I've had in any restaurant. For the price, it was really well worth it. Service was good the second I finished my last bit of soup my main course was out. Waiters were accessible but not annonying and the place was full on a Sunday night. Crowd is more the late 40's - 60's. Sound reduction panels on the roof help keep the chatter down and the noise level comfortable. Over, I would go again.

    Momma needs some flavor!

Hi Hungry People, My husband and I moved uptown a few years ago and although we have our "regular" favs, we are adventurous and like to try out new spots particularly for take out. We pass by Bella Luna and often thought we needed to try it soon. So, after a long week, we decided to hunker down on a Friday night, watch a movie and order some yummy italian. The menu looked quite tasty and we were excited to dig into our Tagliatelle Bolognese and Penne al Funghi with grilled chix and a mezzo to start. Well... I'm not sure where to begin. Let's begin by saying I would have rather spent that 40 bucks on eating salted wax candles dipped in ketchup. Nothing, not even down to the bread, had any flavor. The Bolognese was oily and the pasta over cooked, the chicken was tough and the "vodka sauce" sure could have used little Kettle One to really help get it down. We were so grossed out by the poor excuse for a mezzo plate and kept saying that the vomitty mix in front of us looked more my mothers compost pile in her backyard than anything remotely edible. Please save yourself the nasty experience and order domino's.

    Great Date Place

Was trying to find a place to go for a first or second date that was a little romantic, not loud, and not too too fancy. Bella Luna turned out to be the perfect spot. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect for a date. I'll be coming back.
